One Short-Board Solution for Lake and Waves

I'm reporting on my experience sailing a convertible tri-fin board. I bought the 84 Liter JP Freestyle-Wave board from WindSense to cover high-wind conditions at Lake Lanier and the Outer Banks. JP supplies the board with three fins, one medium center fin, and two side thruster-fins. The thruster-fins can be easily removed and replaced with blanks that fill the fin boxes.

The result is a board that handles high winds and waves with the thruster fins in place, and is fun to sail in medium winds with a larger center fin and the thruster fins removed. It has a really wide wind range and works well in flat and wavy conditions.

Tropical Storm Ana blew through the Outer Banks last week and the convertible board was very controllable in the high wind and waist-high waves on the Sound. The tri-fins slowed it down and gripped in turns, eliminating spin-out. In medium winds the board was faster & more fun with a single fin.
