Olympic snafu?

I couldn't find any details on the reason they threw out race one. URU (Uruguay??) protested RC, but why? Nikos won it. I bet he was steamed! (Hr filed for redress with some others but no go>

All I could figure out from the protest list (http://www.sailing.org/olympics2004/protestList.asp) is that no one finished the course within the time limit maybe? See protest #19 conclusions.

I know. It blew my mind at the Calema Midwinters in '03 when they cancelled a bunch of races because it was W-I-N-D-Y. I mean, it was just a fun 35 to 30mph.

As I recall at the 03 Calema's the IMCO fleet was the only one that was able to complete the race that day, although it may have had more to do with a very strong fleet of sailors for the IMCO. But I just don't see why the IMCO guys could not have handled just about anything at the Olympics. I mean these are world class athletes. The guys that post on rec.windsurfing always tell about how they saild 10 meter sails in 25 knots. IMCO guys should be able to hold down a 7.5 in 40 kt.

Unless it was 40+ knots, I don't think there's any way a race was called for too much wind. The only other possibilities I can think of with too much wind are the safety of the RC, or being unable to set marks and make them stay in place. (I bet the water gets deep quickly, given the look of the shoreline).
