Re: More Foil Content Part 2

I have to believe that the construction around the back of the board is more sturdy - how it support the weight of the sailor and the force of the foil if it weren't.

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.

I would agree and think that the back of the board is fine. When you catapult, just fall towards the back and you'll be good. Biggrin

Re: More Foil Content Part 2

Farrah Hall mentioned Phantom gear - here's their latest email (btw, their foils are $$$ Cray 2 )

Quote:

How Phantom Windfoil and Sails reached the PWA World Championships highest places!

With Nicolas Goyard’s victory in the Men’s Foil PWA World Championships last week-end in Sylt, the Phantom Iris R Foil becomes the World’s best Windfoil just one year after being launched on the market.

The three Phantom riders competing in Sylt (Germany) with the Iris R Foil finished in the Top 4, including 1st place for Nico Goyard, and 2nd place for Alexandre Cousin, who was racing with Phantom sails, and Thomas Goyard missing the podium by just a few points.

This outstanding performance is the result of great team efforts and hard work from the design room to the race course.

After a strong PWA season - with a victory for Thomas in Spain and a 3rd place for Alex in Japan - the Phantom riders finished on a high note in Sylt Germany. Whilst they had to wait several days for the right conditions, they ended completing all races in the last three days with a fantastic opening where all three Phantom riders were on the podium. But on the last day, Thomas wiped out in race 9 when he tried to challenge his brother on the final reach for third place.

“Nothing to do with my gear", admits Thomas Goyard. "I clearly was too eager and took risks. Finishing with a chocolate medal in 4th place overall this season is a bit disappointing, but I won many upwind-downwind races this season so I know my potential. I am also very happy for my brother. He worked really hard this year to become a foiling expert and he definitely deserves his title”.

“I am happy, but I still cannot realise”, says the new World Champion Nicolas Goyard. “I am glad it is over because I was really ill on the last day. I started the last races with a strong fever and a bad caugh. I was so exhausted that I came back to the beach and slept for 30 minutes before climbing on the podium. I am very happy with how I managed the championship overall. I was very focused and consistent. I think I had so many things to deal with at the same time this year that it helped me being more organised and structured in my head”.

With a second place in Sylt and overall, Alex Cousin can also be very proud of his results with the Phantom sails and windfoils. A substantial improvement for the new PWA Vice-World Champion who finished fourth overall last year. “This is the outcome of years of training. Last year I missed the podium by just one point. This year I didn’t do well in the last regatta because I had problems with my starts but I worked really hard on understanding what was going wrong and I sailed more that 40 races in competition over July and August to improve. I was well prepared. My objective is to win the title next year and I am focused to work even harder”.

“The IRIS R windfoil is a winning machine. It is better designed and developed that any other windfoil, wether it is on the materials, layups, connections, wing profiles. With just two prototypes made, it became the world’s best windfoil, when other brands make many, many prototypes”, explains Thomas Goyard. “The sails have incredible stability and power, and Alex and I reached fantastic results with the Phantom sails and windfoil combo this year. Phantom managed to select the right people to reach their objectives and I think this is definitely the strength of this brand”.

"I am really proud of what we achieved in such a short period", says Alex Udin, Founder and CEO of Phantom International. "The past experience I had, running F18 catamaran winning campaign (3 world titles) has been a great help. Phantom has built over the years a strong experience in developing racing sails and foils with a more scientific approach with the help of powerful design softwares (3D sail design software, Computerised Fluid Dynamics and Final Element Analysis) . We are surrounded by designers and engineers who notably work on the America's Cup. This allows to save time in the development and refine the gear in every details which in the end makes the difference. I did spend a lot of time with the riders to better understand their needs and we have been working hard together with a common goal: to become world champion ! Nico did it ! I would like to thanks all the team for their dedication".

When Phantom International started developing windsurfing sails just two years ago, no one in the windsurfing world knew about the brand. Coming from the foiling beach catamaran industry, Alex Udin brought his sailing expertise to develop new windsurfing sails, and quickly went on to design and produce foils.

Thomas Goyard was already a windfoiling expert when he joined Phantom as a team rider in October 2018, but he was keen to do more :

“We are not only riders, we are also part of the development process. When I started, I didn’t really know where that could lead to. There was a bit of a risk aspect because it was a young brand in windsurfing. But I liked the possibility of creating something new and giving my very best to develop great windsurfing gear”.

In December 2018, Alexandre Cousin joined the Phantom team, followed by Nicolas Goyard just three months later. They started sharing ideas and experience and buiding a strong bond.

“Nico, Thomas and I have known each other for a few years but since we are part of the same team this year, we have developed a great relationship”, says Alex Cousin. “We share the results of our tests and everything works really well. The design and technical team at Phantom is made of passionate people who are very involved. We all have the same objective : creating the best sails and foil possible”.

This collective effort is really what makes the difference, according to new Windfoil World Champion Nicolas Goyard :

“We cannot train together so much because we live in three different parts of France. Thomas is in La Rochelle, Alex Cousin in Brittany and I am in the South. But we communicate a lot. We share our results on the various tests and set-ups we make. There is no secret and that’s how we can reach to perfect trim. Thomas being my brother makes it easier for sure, but I also like Alex very much. He is such a nice guy! Honestly, I would have been very happy too if one of them has won the title”.

Phantom International is a French Brittany based company, with an history of innovative sails design and F18 catamarans (World Champion 2012 and 2016). Phantom International produces and promotes the Flying Phantom Elite, the world's first One Design flying catamaran, the Flying Phantom Essentiel, and the Flying Phantom Ultimate. Since 2018, the company enlarges its offer with an innovative and high-end line of windsurfing sails and windfoils.

This should go in Safety and More Foil Content.
I'm not sure if it's intentional but the way he is carrying the foil back
seems to be working pretty well as a fin.

Re: More Foil Content Part 2

from the comments for that video

Quote:
This is the story. After few nights below freezing the water got really cold and I took a short 71 cm mast off of my wife’s board. It saves me an extra 100 meters of wading. I assembled our second Slingshot foil using separate parts I bought over time and a set of bolts that SS sells. This is how I discovered that this set did not include long bolts to connect the Tuttle head to the mast. The shorter 8 mm bolts included in that set that I used are to connect the fuse to the mast in position “A”. My wife is light, and the bolts threaded only 5 turns held until I loaded them with my 200 lbs. After about an hour the threads stripped, and I was in the drink...

More bombproof, more stable is the sales pitch. It is guaranteed for 3 yrs. Apparently jumping is hard on the wings - stuff breaks.

According to this thanks to foiling Windsurfing is no longer on life support.

"New generations of windsurfers thanks to foiling. Windsurfing is not dead!"

Not seeing a lot of difference

Most of the differences are internal because they've worked on stiffening the mast/fuse connection (per Phil's posts). Cosmetically, the mast is more vertical. They still have a one piece mast/fuse like Loke for stiffness and strength.

Their warranty is a pretty big deal for them - I think I read that some were breaking in the States. They warranty the new Vini Pro for 5 yrs. This is one of their usage cases:

This guy posts a lot on FB and puts his foil through the ringer: https://www.facebook.com/maarten.peeters.733

Meanwhile Exocet (Fr) is doing a foil race sail under their XO brand. https://www.exocet-original.fr/gold-foil-c2x30618747 Maybe Progressive Sports will import a few. Their team rider Damien Le Guen is one of the Brest group that have been hitting speed records on largely freeride/freerace kit.
