We've had luck with North Rhino02 and 04 20s and a little bit of luck with a Wipika Hydro 15, all LEIs. We have been going from the park across from Sunrise. Nice launch area on W and SW winds.

kiting

Mel Johnson:
Saw that you kite across from sunrise at Vans Tavern? Have spotted the grassy area for rigging, and will give it a shot some time when the wind is okay(will be ready tomorrow if the wind is okay). I also fly North (ToroII and Buster).PLEASE call me before you head to lanier to kite, and I will probably be able to come out.

Mike, sorry! I didn't see your post until just now (9:11pm). We got in some good kiting today from about 2:30 - 4:30pm. Could have gone longer but the wives were getting impatient. I think the wind was actually building as we were leaving....

We go on the East side of the lake at the Old Federal Park (finally looked up the name). There is a grassy penensula that is the best launching place we've found. We go by boat from Lan Mar.

I'll definately keep your number handy and we'll give you a call before we go out next time. Who knows when that will be. It is extremely unusual to have 8 - 14 mph wind in July. Perhaps our luck will continue. Likewise, if you think it looks good and are thinking of going give me a call.

Mel,
That was you dowonwind yesterday, I presume (lime green kite?). I was upwind on one of those windsurfer thingies.

Glad you guys found a spot to launch from that didn't contain the unofficial Ga. State flower - the pine tree. Better yet, it seemed the wind was definitely better in the slot between Old Federal and Sunrise Marina; felt like there was an extra 2-3 mph there vs in front of Sunrise Cove. I was usually feathering upwind over there and quite often underpowered by the time I got up to the islands just n. of Sunrise. Glad you could make it out and have a good time.

Mel,
Glad to hear that you got a good session in. For a while I thought I was the only person at Lanier who knew what a kite was. What kite did you put up and board? Could you stay upwind in the conditions? I am using a 14m North Buster and 130 board for now.

Mike,
We were on a Rhino02 20. I rode a 147 (175 lbs) and Chris rode a LightWave 125 (135 lbs). Staying upwind was a function of the wind. It was easy until a lull and then there wasn't much to do but wait and drift downwind. We used the boat to pickup. This is a real limitation since one of us always has to wait while the other goes. With 3 of us it will increase time on the water. I have another friend that is interested in coming out as well. With 4 of us it could get very interesting.

On the kite size, we stuggled for 2 years trying to use a Fuel 120 and a Hydro 15. Since we got the 20s, we've had a very respectalbe hit rate... Ít is worth the investment!
