It's Not the First Time Houston Flooded

Hurricane Harvey brought epic winds to Van Pugh this morning, but I couldn't help think about the time we lived in Houston and how glad I am we moved.

Back in 1980 we moved from Houston to Atlanta in part because of the risk of future floods. We had a beautiful home there, but surrounding areas were being developed without any consideration of the impact impervious surfaces would have on increasing runoff. I don't mean to belittle the terrible suffering in Houston, but scientific studies predicting the flooding now impacting the area were denied and ignored.

The attached photo shows flooding from a thunderstorm in 1979 where I worked at the Baylor College of Medicine.

It probably won't be the last time Houston floods either.

Actually, they don't have any consideraton for much at all.

It's all fun and games until someone gets hurt. Those worst hurt will be, as usual, those who have the least resources to recover.

I wondered where those winds were from - seemed Harvey was too far away.

"Spent the morning not letting Potential Tropical Cyclone Ten win"

That's the one that was spinning off the GA/SC coast. Since Princess lives in Chucktown which floods every time the weather sneezes, we've been watching it, too. We've missed two straight years of parents' weekend there due to hurricane evacuations. This year, her sorority gave up and is holding it in the spring.

Have been transfixed by the horror show that is the two dams coming close to topping in Houston last night and this morning.

I saw that comment too but failed to grasp the significance of it. As I always say "If we don't sail in the potential tropical cyclones......" But I do feel better now because I had brief (and rare) moment of empathy and felt badly that Houston's pain was our gain.

Windsurfer's Guilt Syndrome: Realizing that the wind you are enjoying just knocked the crap out of somebody's house.

I usually find that a couple of Tums helps relieve any pangs I think are from empathy. Wink

I've always prided myself on my ability to rise above the hardships of others.

Edit: Good article about Barrett's original point of Texas building practices: https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2017-08-30/harvey-could-reshape-how-and-where-americans-build-their-homes

When I-10 (the interstate) looks like Pamlico Sound

Last night's landfall was brutal. This is a MIchael Bay movie stretched out over a week.

Texans are seeming like rather unsympathetic victims. First, as pointed out above - this has happened before. Second, they have opposed aid for disaster relief in the past. (Which seems really stupid for a state in Hurricane alley).

The politics of places like Houston are a bit different than the rest of Texas. I agree with you in the irony, though.
