Not even a week since reopening, the city of Miami Beach closed the popular South Pointe Park back up after thousands of visitors failed to wear face coverings and social distance to slow the spread of the coronavirus.
The Miami Beach Police Department announced Monday that the park was closed until further notice after they issued 7,329 verbal face cover warnings and more than 470 warnings for failing to social distance between Friday and Sunday. Most of the violations were at South Pointe Park, according to MBPD.

At first we were told not to wear mask, then to wear mask and social distance. I've been wearing a mask and gloves only when I shop, in a building where distancing was difficult. According to the article, masks and distancing are required at Miami's beaches. And ABC's Dr Jen just said to wear masks outdoors,
As some of our group are in a high risk category (old), it wouldn't hurt to wear masks when we're at the parks rigging. We have been good about keeping our distance and should continue this.
Also, I have a cool gator (gaiter) so I'll be stylin.

PS - I'm worried about our parks REALLY being closed due to overcrowding on the weekends (VP and OF.) As they are officially closed, no one is there to limit access, and at OF, not only were all the parking spaces taken, anywhere a car could be parked was taken. It was a zoo sunday, but thanks to Chris and the LLSC, I didnt have to mess with it..
Advice from Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases: Wear a face mask when you can not maintain a 6 foot distance from other people you do not live with. You are at far less risk from air-borne infection outdoors, than indoors. Unless it's a securely-fitting N-95 mask, masks offer only partial protection. The best strategy, especially outdoors, is to maintain a 6 foot distance from others.

Part of me has always been suspicious of this recommendation. My tinfoil self says that was said to conserve the supply of available masks for health care workers and they still didn't have enough. It was said then, iirc, that masks were only 50% effective. In retrospect, that would have improved the odds for thousands.
I think they were pretty up front about the fact the there weren't even enough masks for all the health care workers, and like hand sanitizer, toilet paper, pepcid tablets, quinine pills (and soon meat) - people were hoarding them. So people were encouraged to make their own and make extras to donate to health care workers. So many people did so (myself included) that soon elastic was in short supply. Now so many people and industries are making masks that the general public can and should wear them. Masks are like "team defense" in sport - it works best if all the players do their part, otherwise the other side (team Covid) finds the weakest link attacks there. However, it does protect individuals somewhat and even 50% is infinitely greater than zero.
I had pollen masks left over from previous allergy seasons (which in the past I have even worn while windsurfing) so we use those, along with a few of the masks I made. The benefit of the mask depends on material used, the Corona Virus Science blog has some very good info on that. What I've read recently is that 100% cotton and chiffon or silk makes a very effective mask.
A google search using “influenza vitamin D nih” returns a number of articles with evidence of vitamin D being effective against the flu virus. There has been speculation that “warm weather” might stop the corona virus. Of course, “warm weather” means “more sunshine”, which has been documented to cause seasonal increases in serum levels of vitamin d. Conversely, lower levels of UVB can lead to lower levels of Vitamin D. Some factors that reduce vitamin D from UVB exposure are:
Higher latitude (e.g., Seattle)
Lots of cloudy days (e.g. Seattle)
Staying inside (e.g. nursing home patients)
Being old (old skin doesn't produce as much vitamin D)
Simulating being old (by wearing a wetsuit, using sunscreen, etc.
Taking supplementary vitamin D as a precaution is probably prudent. I take 5000-7000 IU per day, and have avoided the flu for years.
Dr. Fauci joined TheStreet to talk about why masks are important when you leave the house, and to better explain why there was back and forth in the beginning.
"Masks are not 100% protective. However, they certainly are better than not wearing a mask. Both to prevent you, if you happen to be a person who may feel well, but has an asymptomatic infection that you don't even know about, to prevent you from infecting someone else," said Fauci. "But also, it can protect you a certain degree, not a hundred percent, in protecting you from getting infected from someone who, either is breathing, or coughing, or sneezing, or singing or whatever it is in which the droplets or the aerosols go out. So masks work."
So, why weren't we told to wear masks in the beginning?
"Well, the reason for that is that we were concerned the public health community, and many people were saying this, were concerned that it was at a time when personal protective equipment, including the N95 masks and the surgical masks, were in very short supply. And we wanted to make sure that the people namely, the health care workers, who were brave enough to put themselves in a harm way, to take care of people who you know were infected with the coronavirus and the danger of them getting infected."
Should sailboat racing be concerned by the sudden uptake in windsurfing? No, not at all! Saturday had winds regularly gusting 30 knots, so it really wasn't a day to be responsibly sailing.
