How to sell gear long distance?

I have recently had some people inquiring about used gear I have for sale -- but these people live in Boston and Maine.  Is there a safe way to sell gear long distance so I get my money and they get the gear?  Any ideas?

Re: How to sell gear long distance?

safe as in the stuff getting there or safe as in you get your money and they get their stuff?

In the first, selling w/s gear is a royal pain because you need to dig up boxes to fit the stuff in (or in the case of a board, tons of bubble wrap). Chuck and Tim can fill you in, I'm sure on how to do it.

On the second, do it the ebay way.  Have them send money order, check (let it clear first before sending anything), or set up a paypal account.  When the money is good, then you send the stuff.  The buyer takes a bit of risk but that's just the way it is (but most "bad guys" usually work scams with expensive laptops not used w/s stuff so most folks are willing to take the risk)

But more to the point, I'm always amused that the heaviest, bulkiest thing I have for sale is the item that someone from the West Coast rings up about.  I've gotten calls about my Windglider from San Fran and an 8.2 from San Diego.

Gotta love the internet.

I got a call from Las Vegas about and Astro Rock I sold months before.

Having the buyer send the Money Order is a good idea, and pretty normal.

You might also check Fed Ex Ground.  They are very cheap, and offer various options (COD is available according to the booklet I got from them) and can arrange to make residential deliveries at a specific date and time.  Boards might be too big, however.  They also have insurance (first $100 included, additional at 50 cents per $100).

I'd suggest using an escrow service such as the one at windsurfingclassifieds.com.  They only charge 5% of the transaction.

May your water be smooth and your winds be swift.
