How to pump a windfoil

Tired of being anchored to the water while someone you know cruises past? Great video by Rytis. We've been watching is vlogs for a while and great to see he had some outstanding races at the IQFoil "Worlds" in Garda

Re: How to pump a windfoil

Someone needs to do a video on how to pump up onto the foil in 16" incoming boat chop while weighing 180 lbs plus .
I can pump up onto the foil in low wind with flat water pretty easy...

I am a big fan of Greg and Emily's videos.
Thank you for posting that Moredownhaul

He's a big boy at 199cm (about 6'-6") and 90+kg (200lb).

Re: How to pump a windfoil

I have seen at least dozen videos on this forum about how pump a windfoil. I submit - it is much better NOT to pump a windfoil, so I've done a how to NOT Pump a windfoil video. And guess what you get foiling just as good. Even better because you are going faster and your board is more stable. So new foilers don't make the mistake I did - don't think you have to pump to foil. Just get planing, move your weight back on the board and you will soon have a nice smooth take off, just like an airplane rather than trying to pogo stick your way into orbit.

Now here a video of the same fool pumping his windfoil. And the music at start seems appropriate at this time. So I ask you - which is better?

*Disclaimer - ask anyone. I'm probably the last guy who should be doing how to technique videos.

No, you absolutely don't need to pump to foil. Yesterday, I foiled quite a bit with almost minimal pumping as I'm not ready a) stress my recent stitches and b) it was going to be a long day, I'm still out of shape and I didn't want to fry myself somewhere deep in Forsyth Co a long way from home.

If I may offer a thoughts: if you begin to plane with your front foot already in the strap, you'll save a bit of time taking off but still with no pumping.

However, when the body is ready, I'll return to pumping like a wild monkey again. Even on a breezy day like Sunday, I had to time my tacks to occur in the middle of a gust because the difference in wind required to get off the water, to me, is significant. If I pump, I can lower my wind threshold by maybe 3 mph or more. Flying is better than crying. Lol

If pumping isn't your thing - no worries. The important part is that you are on the water, having fun. I get to see your smiling face and it's a blast seeing you have a second windsurfing career because of your foil. Me? I'll be desperately flogging my sail.
