How good is windsurfing as a workout?

Here is a copy of my fitbit chart from yesterday, showing calories burned. There are other metrics available, but I think this one is a reasonable measure of the level of activity doing different things. The first sets of "bumps" is when I did my morning workout (various strength) and 45 minutes of elliptical. The second set is when I went over to nearby park and did some kite flying. The third set was windsurfing, including setting up the gear, carrying it to the water and sailing for about 30 minutes. (I took the device off after that because it was getting windier and I thought I might fall in. The device is not waterproof, though it is claimed to be water resistant). The last set is going for a walk after dinner. The upshot of this is that windsurfing is a little better than flying a kite, but not as good as working out* about the same as going for a walk.* Of course, I wasn't sailing very fast and the wind wasn't that strong, so perhaps a stronger session would be a bit different. I was only using a 6.2 and was more or less in displacement mode. In the 90 minutes that followed, I did get more wind and didn't fall off, so maybe I should have kept wearing it.

* - It is more fun than going for a walk, or working out.

Randy,
I have a friend that rides bikes a lot. One day he's looking at one of those charts that tells you how much calories you burn per activity. Cycling was somewhere down there between weeding the garden and using the remote to change channels. Then he looked at the fine print "Assumes 10 mph speed."

As some of you may know, that's pretty slow for a serious cyclist, like my friend, who may average anywhere between 16-20 mph or more. The calories burned at those speeds can be from 700-1100 per hour.

Point of the story: none. If a 6.2 in displacement mode "floats your boat", that's cool. Don't try to measure fun. Just enjoy it. Otherwise, go to the gym and be miserable with everyone else hammering away at some stepperclimbermill thing.

Source: My friend's wife dragged him to spin class.

AJ - you don't seem to understand a basic point - fun comes and goes, friends will be here one day, gone the next , life will deal you both winning and losing hands, but in the end numbers are the only thing you can count on. And besides - numbers are fun.

(BTW - knocking it out in the gym was the first set of bumps in the morning.)
