That's a good question. I've sailed Old 41 around a dozen times. I usually make it out there once ever year or so, but I've never actually sailed all the way over to the Welcome Center. (In fact, I didn't even know it was there.) I think part of the problem is that I usually only went there on a S or SW or W. On a SW or W that areas is pretty wind shadowed and hard to get to. You could get there on due S, but that hasn't happened that often. If it is open it might be an alternative launch but tbh - the Old 41 area is a pretty erratic place. I've had some good days there but often leave disappointed. Bring big stuff.

If you are looking for a S or even SW Fields Landing is potentially much better though farther away. It closes early in the fall, but opens pretty early in the year. I've had good luck at times, but it is a small sample size.

Another spot that may be of interest which I have never tried is Dallas Landing Park. Never sailed there but it has a nice beach. Not sure when it opens either. It is in a narrow spot on the lake which has always given me ideas about the Bernouli effect.

Thanks! The forecast is looking SE today and some of the models were pointing to more wind on the west side earlier today. Right now, Langdon and I are thinking about going to Vanns mid afternoon. I'm pushing the envelope on the lightwind side so going out in probably stupid conditions. I've sailed a weird amount of S and SE in the last week. I used to go years not sailing that direction.

And what was with the breeze intown yesterday? Amirite? Blowing 20 from the SW and 70 degrees while Lanier has E at 5 and 58 degrees. That was some Isrealites leaving the Pharoah kind of stuff.

It did get pretty windy for a while around here yesterday around 4 pm. Kind of a fluke I think and it didn't last that long. As for today, I was out at MAP for a couple hours (1-3) not the kinds of winds I would want to sail anything but a laser (and even then, it would be a ?).

BTW - SE at Old 41 is a bad direction. The shore on the east side of the lake has higher ground and taller trees. On the west side of the lake the trees and obstructions aren't nearly so bad, so it does work ok for SW. Though as well all know, SW winds are among the most fickle.

That section of old 41 has been closed for at least 5 years. I asked at the gate one time and they told me budget cuts were to blame. I have sailed that section on South and West winds. It gets kinda squirrelly near Dallas Landing with the South wind. On a West you are limited to half the body of water but it is 10 minutes from my house so it will do in a pinch.

But, it is a pretty nice baseball stadium you got instead. Wink
