Earthlink definitely works in Hatteras -- but you MAY have to make some changes to your dial up settings. Our password was too long for how their system is setup up there -- and we were having login problems (tech support told us how to fix it though). On the other hand, my brother used earthlink there last month, and he did not have to make any changes.
I have seen other people use aol up there also -- should work fine.

Still can't figure out this kite thing. Saw 12-15 kites the other day all speeding by downwind to be retrieved by a jet ski. I guess pretty soon we can expect to find the equivalent of a chair lift out here in the sound.
I used earthlink ..dialup / 4 yrs and DSL 2 years. I liked their service. NOW ... cable modem, the only way to fly.

AOL also has a local number but conscience prohibits giving it.
