Going to Maui - any suggestions ?

I'm finally doing it, I'll be there for three weeks and I'm leaving May 2nd. One week for windsurfing, girlfriend arrives so spend a week around the island with her, and then one more week for windsurfing after she leaves. I'm psyched. Any suggestions for someone who has never been there?

For a car, looks like a good way to go may be to rent something like a an escort wagon for $300 a week from one of the places that rents windsurfing vans. This way I can keep the gear inside and wouldn't have to worry about it as much at night. There is no way I would leave gear on top of the car. And for board rental Hawaiian Island or Hi-Tech Sports looks good to me, quoted me $350-$400 for 12 days.

When my girlfriend is there we're staying at a friends timeshare for free. Recomendations for cheap places to stay when I'm on my own?

By the way, in case anyone else is interested in going I got tickets on Delta for $329 tax included. Good deal.

I have been to Maui 7 times over the past few years. The longest I ever stayed was 3.5 weeks. I feel like I know that place like the back of my hand. If you want you can call me at 770-978-7660. When I was there I windsurfed, dirt biked, and climbed to the bottom of Haualuaka (sp) volcano.

PS I would like to know more about the $329 ticket. This is an excellent price.

I have just been checking the Delta website daily ATL-OGG, it has been around $850-$1000 but dropped and I booked last week, don't know if it's still available. It connects through Seattle which is not the most direct route but it's not far out of the way. Also it was not available on weekend travel, I'm leaving on Monday and returning on a Tuesday. Travelocity had been giving me $700 with Delta to LAX and then United to OGG.

I will give you a call.

I'm, going June 4th through the 15th. Best prices I could find is in the 700-1200 dollar range. Was the 350 ticket in the cargo hold?

I booked it right on the Delta website, it might have been just a one-day fluke or something but I'll take it.

Plop? Where do you rent gear from and what kind of vehicle are you getting?

Plop, I found a minivan from alamo for 199 per week which looks good, this way I can just keep my gear and the board inside it and don't have to worry about it at night, what do you think? You can also rent an SUV through the same link for 199 a week:

When I have rented gear they always wanted it to be returned that same day and then pick up gear again the next morning. Call the shop and see what the policy is. A dinky car will work because they have roof racks for the cars. All the gear rental shops are within 2 miles of Kanaha beach (airport area). I do not recall any shops in Kehi area. Kanaha beach is closed until 11 am for swimmers and snorklers.
