If you are running Linux, I think Kino will do all that for you. Ubuntu, Fedora and SuSE are all really easy distributions to get going on - many folks don't realize they are using Linux until we tell them at school, the change is so transparent.

just viruses and spyware.... Wink

try this:

Open source isn't just "free as in beer" but "free as in speech". With Windows, you don't even own the software but merely the right to use it (and when it comes with your Dell or HP, use it only on THAT computer and not any others even if it dies). Okay, I'll get off my soap box.

Phillip. It is not free but the program I use is called Power Director. It works great. I have made many DVDs from it. I have one DVD I made of a 12 hour dirt bike race in Union Point Ga. and I have sold over $500 worth of them.

Videor for web

I use Macromedia Flash 8, with Sorenzen Sweeze, Not free though, but worthwhile. Great for shrinking file sizes.

Yep, Macromedia Flash is about as far from free as you can get ($699)! It also has a huge, montsterous learning curve.

So -- are you looking to just convert large avi files to mpg? If so TMPGEnc is an awesome, free little tool for doing that. http://www.tmpgenc.net/
