FAA and Kitesurfing

Hey,

This is the first time I've seen kitesurfing (or any type of surfing) mentioned in the aviation media...

Lots of discussion on rec.windsurfing about this. apparently, too many bozos were straying directly into the flight path instead of staying in the permitted area which was closer than the 5 mile general prohibition. Several times the tower has had to halt operations until the kiters were out of the way.

The concern is that a crippled jet sucks in a kite as it's laboring off the runway on a single engine. Seagulls are bad enough but a kiter? Oops, meant kite. The locals are talking of hiring a park warden in an effort to police the area on a full time basis.
