Close Call in Erie

I was windsurfing on the Bay at Presque Isle, flying along at 30 mph, when a dozen 50 ft long powerboats suddenly passed me at 100 mph, made a high speed turn and passed close by again. I was relieved not to be run over. This reminded me of Tim Carter being hit by a boat several year ago on Lake Lanier.

The Lake Lanier Poker Run is July 18 this year. Probably not a good day to be practicing your waterstarts out in the main channel.

Yep, the video captures the speed of these boats running flat out - fun to watch from shore. At 100 mph the fuel burn is 10 gal. per minute. Due to a car accident that blocked area roads, the race referee did not arrive to warn us not to launch in the middle of the race course. It was no fun being the pickle in the middle. These boats are like ballistic missiles on the water - they don't turn well.

At $4 a gallon - Fuel is a lot more expensive on the water. There are no Quick Trips or Race Tracs with docks. An old neighbor of mine had a 35 foot go fast boat. Twenty years ago when auto gas was like $1.29, he said it cost $50 an hour to run.

I'm not in a place to judge. I drag a half ton trailer from here to Hatteras to carry a bunch of foam and plastic boards so I can splash in the water.

Glad you are safe.

If people didn't waste a lot money on their hobbies, sports and other things they really don't need, the whole economy would be a lot smaller, and life would be pretty plain. Think a whole society like the Amish but without their level of religion.

Close call Barrett. Glad you avoided Mr. Mayhem. (And I doubt those cigarette boat boys carry Allstate insurance.)
