building a windsurfing land simulator?

Hey guys. Anybody have any ideas on how to build a cheap land simulator? Something good for a newbie to practice balancing on? Thanks!

I think the best thing to do is to put it in the water and learn to balance. Forget that land stuff.

Talon,

Another approach is to build or buy a landsailor. Basically take longboard skateboard and put a universal joint on it near the front. To make it 1000% better you would use a mountain board (like they have at REI). The basic issue with this is finding a place to sail it. High school parking lots are usually free on weekends as are some office parks. Finding one that's flat and not wind shadowed is tough, however. But, if you have a place to sail, you cna learn lots of sail handling, jibing, etc.

Try a wide board (Start, etc.) Getting up and falling in repeatedly is soooooo 90s

I've got a new 120 liter Mistral Flow that had a slight blemish on it. Mistral replaced the board and made me saw the tail off the Flow board, like right through the fin box. Anyone that wants it can have it, could make a land trainer or unique wall or yard art (mailbox?).

How's this for an idea, caution, this just came to me:
Take Davids Flow, find the balance point (somewhere between the mast track and foot staps) with an average guy standing on it in the straps and a small rig attached, drill a hole thru it, attach a universal joint and base to it, then attach the base to the center of a 4'x4' sheet of plywood with a 2by4 box built around the side of the plywood to be just a tad lower than the universals height. When balanced, the weight would be on the universal and the board would be just above the box and would spin around, well it would probably rub on the 2 by 4 box somewhat. Well, I guess the Universal joint wouldnt support the weight, how about a mechanical UV? It's early, I need more coffee.

Talon,
I'm an instructor who uses a simulator to teach all the time and my advice is get a Indo Baord or other balance board -- those simple boards things with a roller -- and work out on them to improve overall balance. I have one and use it all the time. I use a good land simulator in lessons but it doesn't really help with balance at all. That's not it's purpose really. It helps the beginner windsurfer see how movement and positioning of the sail, or pressue with one's feet, affects the upwind - downwind angle of the board. The sail manipulating things that one might think would be helpful to do on a rotating simulator can be done just as well by rigging a sail and standing it up in the back yard unattached to anything or attached to your board sitting on the grassy ground (w/o fin of course) . Call me -- or e-mail -- if you want to discuss it further. Chuck at Whitecap 706-860-0639 or cell:706-833-WIND.

windsurfing simulator

Talon,

Check item "3654052414" on e-bay

Strap an old board on it and you have a windsurfing land simulator.

Guest,
That actually is a "stimulator" (our joking nickname for simulator). Great find. That one is the cat's pajamas as it's the lightweight aluminum version. Add board and spin around to your heart's content.

Simulator

The seller on e-bay probably would have more hits if he used the joking name.

Mark...Been out of town so I missed this and also, unfortunately the board didn't make our recent move, I knew when I got rid of it somebody would think of something cool to do with it. Sorry!

BTW - a post on rec.ws regarding the same item indicates it is only for display purposes, not for actual use as a simulator.

However, other posters seem to say it would work great. Caveat Emptor is all I can say.
