I don't know any other place for kites when the wind is due west when the water is this high. (I used to launch my kite boat from Galts on W, but that requires low water.) The current COE list shows "Old Federal Day Use Ramp and Beach" closed but not the park, so its like VP*, where apparently they don't mind if you windsurf but you just don't know. So I'd say - just go and hope for the best. The map also does not show Old Fed as being closed. If the park is locked down, I guess it's no worse than getting skunked.....

*BTW - now VP only lists the beach as closed.

Alejo, Army's Facebook page only shows Old Fed beach and ramp closed, not park. Turns out I can't make it up today. Alan is on his way to Van Pugh.

Van Pugh has a closed sign at the entrance and the bathrooms are locked but there’s boat trailers in the parking lot and other cars here.

FB update this morning has the ramp open. Probably haven't had the time to send someone around to remove the sign. Do everyone a favor and take the sign. Keep it for a breezy weekend in June. Diablo

When this post is read at my trial: It's a joke, dammit!

Meanwhile, at VP. Alan, parting the waters with his Mos... oh, now I get it. Moses. Water. Dash 1

Did Neil fly?

I'm noticing a theme here - the foil revolution has arrived.

Alejo, did you get out today?

Talked to both Alan and Rhett and they had a good time. A bit powered up.

It would be really interesting to see some pictures of VP or Old Fed to get an idea of how they look now.

Park is posted closed at the entrance so Rogier called the Rangers and got permission to use OF. Ranger: "remember you are out there at your own risk"...sort of like "when are we not!!". Current OF water level means you can launch/land up on the grass riding right over the rip-rap boulders.

Wow- looks perfect for all manner of water/windsports......thanks for posting the pics.

BTW - what number do you call to get the rangers? Could be helpful to know for other locations.

Yesterday, Wednesday was fun. It's windy and cold this morning but the sun is shinning, so I might try it again this afternoon. And Friday, windier, cold and chance of rain, is a maybe, and Saturday looks pretty good, maybe. Anyway, I can go. So if anybody's going?

I love photos, they can capture that 1 millisecond when it looks like you know what you’re doing.

I think I'm going to blow off today. I don't feel well enough to push the low 40s envelope. West Point is looking warmer for tomorrow and Saturday if anyone is game. Slightly less wind but I'll be able to feel my fingers...

Rhett reports 6.4 on a solo foil day. Good conditions. btw, the Army continues to pour water out of the bottom of Buford dam and the level is the lowest it's been in two weeks but still near historic levels.

Re: Breezy week ahead Tues 2/25 onwards

Friday West Point report: Seeing the gray skies outside and the reports from Gilmer of the thermometer struggling to hit the mid 40s, I decided to scoot south. It was 54 and partial clouds when I rolled up to the lake. It's pretty brown with silt from all the rain but surprisingly, the level was down a few feet. Winds were W at about 10-20 which meant that I was up on the wing about 95% of the time with a 4.7. Absolutely worth the drive. Kiters, you absolutely must put this place on your list.

The BBQ place in town has amazing fried okra. Returned to Atlanta with a couple of servings of okra and BBQ chicken sandwich for LIsa and I to have and she was a happy camper, too.

Escaping to the sunshine made me realize that I'd really have a tough time living in some place like Seattle.

btw, as mentioned before, just off the point (straight ahead on the first pic below) are some decent sized rocks. If you go down there, launch off to the right and work your way upwind from there.
