Anyone sailing this afternoon?

Just passed across the dam and small caps on the lake. How is it up at old Fed? Or vp?

Dave D. was kiting at VP on a 12 until the wind let up after lunch along with a bunch of windsurfers on 6-7s. I don't know who signed on for the afternoon shift as many of us did morning. There might be something left as the day cools off but keep expectations reasonable.

This morning was very gusty - wind would really cycle. We'd be getting beat up by 25 in the main channel and 10 min later it would be only 10.

Fingers crossed. I wish there was a good launch for the main channel over by the dam. But oh well here's to hoping for VP!

I went to MAP, as usual, mainly in the morning though. Yes 3

Did you go? Rhett was foiling there this afternoon.

You may want to check out West Bank Park or Tidwell.

West Bank: https://windsurfatlanta.org/wiki/West_Bank_Park

Tidwell: https://windsurfatlanta.org/wiki/Tidwell_Park

Just be aware that there really isn't a Plan B for West Bank downwind other than the water intakes and that big concrete thing. Shok

Mary Alice Park is nearby but I've not sailed there so I don't know how bad the wind shadows are.

Re: Anyone sailing this afternoon?

Tidwell has longest fetch on the lake for a pure E. It is measured in miles about 8 miles vs. thousands of feet for most of the rest. As a result it tends to have stronger winds but more chop than other spots. It is an easy launch for ws, but unless the water is low, kites are tough. (Only 2 guys have ever kited there to my knowledge and they only came once.)

MAP has a fetch about the same as VP (about a mile) for E, and a little better if there is some north in it. It also works better than any place I've found on the lake for a SSE-S winds which tend to occur in the spring. It much more of a flat water spot, and it is the closest spot on the lake for those driving up 400. It has the drawback that it is not a COE park, so you have to pay $5 (or $30 for an annual pass) to get in however, the beach closes Sep 4 so it goes to the honor ( Lol ) system until next May. The boat ramp is open year round. It probably has the nicest beach on the lake but during the summer weekends the beach is pretty crowded but it is still an easy launch for ws. When the beach is "closed" people still walk in and use it all the time. It would be a ways to carry ws gear but I think boarding would be workable since I can launch my kiteboat from the beach. You can launch WS boards quite easily from the area around the boat ramp.

Re: Anyone sailing this afternoon?

Wow! Thanks guys! That is super comprehensive!! I am going to have to use that info to explore.

I did go to VP but couldn't get my kite launched off the beach there. Every now and again a gut would blow enough to get it airborne but before I could get the board on my feet and swing the kite to ride out the wind would lull and the kite would fall. Super frustrating cause it was definitely windy enough. I gave up after a bit and did some paddle boarding and when I got out on the lake it was windy enough to be pushing me around on the SUP. Oh well. Hopefully next time I can try some of those other spots.

Appreciate it!!

If only there was a way for the wind to push the paddleboard more efficiently....

Wink

Glad we could help.
