Allatoona on SE

Forecast looks markedly better for Allatoona than Lanier for a bit of a SE breeze this afternoon. Is anything open over there this time of year?

Re: Allatoona on SE

I think the problem with SE (NE or even E) would be the launch. Chrispy posted last week or so that the Park Attendant said you couldn't walk into the lower park. That leaves only the boat ramp, which would be a problem on an easterly. I think getting out would probably be almost impossible, and getting back in would be even harder. Be ready to swim I guess.

You can walk out here (open all year):

34° 5'10.62"N
84°42'45.53"W

This area is closed permanently but would be nice:

34° 5'10.49"N
84°42'39.52"W

Re: Allatoona on SE

Not clear to me which of the gps readings were in the link, but I've been to Old 41 13 times over the years. Never known it to work on SE. If it did would have to be a very deep into the southerly direction. The terrain to the east is trees on top of an elevated area. It works best for due south, sw, or even w. The terrain to the west is lower and flatter. Having said that, its more of a place to go for something different, or if the parking lot is full at Allatoona or the wind is SW. (Fields Landing is further away but quite a bit better on S or SW - but terrible on SE.) Its not often that great of a spot. Wind there is pretty fickle for some reason (may just be the nature of wind here when the direction is S). I've had some fun days there, but only go back every few years because it wasn't all that compelling. Plus the season there is pretty short. I suppose you could walk in your stuff, but it would be a pretty long walk, esp. if the water is low.

For SE a place to look at would be Lake Acworth. Its pretty small, but has a decent fetch on SE. Acworth Park is probably open all year, and there is another primitive park you can launch from on the opposite side of the lake. Its pretty limited though - SE works as does NW (not as well) but its pretty limited to those angles. (I've never tried on due E - it might work, though I heard from Gene that it was limited to SE.)

Is there a cover charge (fee) for Acworth?

Re: Allatoona on SE

I used to sail a Minifish on Acworth back in the 1980s (e. coli days). I recall what appeared to be a windsurfing class being taught where the golf course is now. Right were there used to be a road that just went straight into the lake. Years later, someone told me (Gene?) that the owner of Go With The Flow in Roswell used to give lessons there (and also sold equipment).

There's a lot of paddle boarders that go there now. The park is called South Shore Park and is of off Ragsdale Road. I've sailed from there a bit. Kind of nice on a summer day for light wind with no motor boats allowed. http://cityofacworth.org/index.php/parks-par

No fee required for South Shore Park. For Cauble Park on the other side, "parking is free Monday through Friday. If you are not a City of Acworth Resident then a weekend fee of $10.00 (cash only) will be charged per vehicle during the hours of 8:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m."

Re: Allatoona on SE

As I mentioned in a previous post, at low water, you could wade your gear from the gault's ramp to access NE to E if you wanted to.

Micah - I couldn't relate GPS coordinates to specific sites.

Lake Acworth - I have gone there a fair amount over the years, mostly instructing. I was not aware that the weekend fee was assessed year round, but it may be. As a place for light wind sailing and paddling, it's nice, but I wouldn't go to sail there if the wind had much south or any north. I went by recently to consider shortboarding on SE - could have just been conditions that day, but it didn't look very good - very patchy with a short reach. As mentioned, there is a primitive free park on the south side of the lake.

Re: Allatoona on SE

I should have mentioned it is speculation. I have sailed old 41 on a SW during the summer. It was warm and fun but nothing to get the adrenaline pumping. I have never tried the SE spot (drone outpost) but have been eying it for a while. The water at toona is up right now due to the rain...last time I checked anyway.
