Actually, I don't think this will discourage many people. In fact, it may encourage more than it discourages. Certain sports (auto racing, hang gliding, skydiving, perhaps motor cycling, etc) have an appeal that in part stems from their inherent danger. And what one person sees as "too dangerous" may well seem perfectly within the limits of another.

the guy is wrong, if I heard the video correctly, that "this is the first time this has happened." A couple of years ago, someone quite good, a pro iirc, ended up on the roof of a building the same way. He went up about 200 ft.

I agree with Randy though.

Kitesurfing is definately dangerous, i have broken 2 ribs , sprained my foot, got hit with the board in the head , and although i had my helmet on that saved my life, I still needed stichs for a deep scalp cut. got picked up by the coast gaurd once due to offshore winds had to swim for about 2 hours in cold water in seattle .
Thats why Its a must to take lessons and i always recommend that.
In addition to that the equipment are becomming more and more safe, kites can go in a greater range of wind, it is easier to depower and detach yourself from the kite.
Its a great x-treme sport very addictive.
