2017 - How was your year?

Tell us about it. Good, bad, indifferent.

Joke of the year about me:
Q: How do you know webguy foils?
A: He no longer talks about crossfit, vaping or being a vegan

Right there at the end of the video, there is like a bubble in space time about in the middle of the picture. Could be you have got a video of a wormhole and didn't realize it.

Now I know what it was - when you got launched head first into the water, it created a shock wave causing the big bubble to come out of the water a few seconds later. I was going to send it to "What On Earth" or "Strange Evidence" but probably don't need to now.

BTW - I think a lot of us are waiting till the end of the year to decide how our year was.

Re: 2017 - How was your year?

I'll bite. 2017 was the year of the targeted mini-trips, and this cynical wind-snob can say that 2017 - my 25th year of ‘windsporting’ - was one of the best ever. My 2017 session log:

  1. 3.7m – 2 sessions
  2. 4.2m – 10 sessions
  3. 5.0m – 6 sessions
  4. 5.8m – 5 sessions
  5. 7.0m – 2 sessions

Not a mind blowing number of sessions, but they were high quality. Last year started with that epic trip to Tampa, followed by a couple sessions at the lake, a spring week-long trip to Hatteras, a summer of charging back up to Hatteras for 2/3 day mini-trips when the forecast came up, and then a week long Fall Hatteras trip. It was a hell of lot of driving, and it was sometimes logistically messy to drop real world obligations for 25kt forecasts in Hatteras, but it was worth it and I am super stoked to do it again in 2018.

The year started with an incredible trip to Fred Howard park.

The spring Hatteras trip produced some great wind with good friends chilling at the Canadian Hole.

Langdon gets the award for most improved sailor. Happy he has joined the flock. Excellent location for a nap.

I even tried kiteboarding. It was an accelerated lesson and was almost able to get 10 second ride by the end of day. My initial impressions of kiteboarding - nope, not interested!

Had a great family trip to Hatteras in early June also. Elizabeth got some quality time on the water. Elizabeth gets the best wife award for encouraging me to take more trips! Didn't get any pics of us sailing, but here is a shot after a rainstorm when the sun was coming out.

Hatteras can be really windy in summer, you just need to be able to get away on short notice. Last summer produced some of the hottest windsurfing sessions I have ever had. I was sweating my ass off while rigging, and really looked forward to getting wet.

So for 2018, hopefully more of the same. I am also going to explore some other North Carolina launches when it gets warm - Harkers Island is first on the list. Also, I need to take more breaks when sailing so I can get some better pictures of people actually sailing!

Re: 2017 - How was your year?

2017 was a good year.
A big thanks for all those who helped me progress.
I had a great time going on trips to Hatteras and Tarpon Springs and looking forward to more adventures.

2017
Spent less time uphauling than 2016 (kinda a big deal)

Sailed at least once a week 47 weeks out of 52.
(I should be better than I am)

Used a 7.5m (continous thank you to Gene) and 6.0m most of the year.

Learned... ok, learning how to sail a longboard ( a big thanks to Simon) still having a blast with it, including sailing it today.
Another round of thanks to CP, Foildood, Webguy for helping me to learn to sail it.

Waterstarting, well sometimes especially if I can still touch the bottom.
Nitrojiber and others were a big help with this.

Front foot in the footstrap ( occasionally ) still spend the rest of the time tripping over them.

Had a great time with both our group here and the Augusta group.

Looking forward to the year of the Skate

Whenever I think about foiling, I start seeing that as a Preview of Coming Attractions.

Thanks Randy and Webguy! Actually forgot to include a mention of my family Hatteras trip - so just updated my original post. Again, last year was a great for me, so I thought it was worthy of documenting.

May and June in Hatteras are criminally under-rated. And, spouses that accompany us even more so.
