12-26 Tybee Island

Had a pretty good day today down at Tybee Island. Went out off the N end of the island with about 4 Tybee locals. We need to keep road trips in mind even though our wind has been good....

13:55 NW 20 G 28
12:55 W 14 G 28
11:55 W 23 G 29
10:55 W 22 G 29

I was out on the Sonic 11 and my Litewave 125. I was never overpowered but didn't have to take the kite down past about 1:00 all day. The jumps were pretty incredible. Enough to make me nervous looking down. ...

The guys down here all seem to be riding North Vegas or Rebels. They were out on 10s and 12s.

How was Lanier? Did I mention it was about 55 degrees.... Smile

Mel - The south end is a little more favorable for west. couple of sand bars at the mouth of the inlet give a low-tide option of flat water or some pretty sharp faces just windward of the bar. I was on a 5.3 over at Hilton Head and saw kiters thru the binoculars on the north end and the south end of Tybee. for some reason only one of the local kiters showed up that day - think he was on a 9.0 and still got the dip treatment. Joe O'Leary and I sailed Tybee later in the week. The wind never cranked to full forecast, but it was fun to sail with one of the Atlanta brothers. Supposed to blow again Monday and Tuesday. 62 degree water. 60-70 air. It's rough . . . tc

Tim,

Wish I'd known that you guys were at Tybee. I would have come out had I known. I noticed that the forecast seemed consistently optimistic most of the week and then when it called for nothing the wind would blow. Maybe I just wasn't looking in the right place. It got a little frustrating. I was about 30 minutes from Tybee so I couldn't see what was going on first hand. I finally started looking at the Grey's reef bouy to see what it was actually blowing...

Looked like it was blowing about 15 knots Tuesday as we were leaving... Hope you got some good sailing in.

Funny that the local guys I was with didn't talk about the possibilities on the South side on a Westerly. I think they got tired of the chop on the N side. It was near high tide so the wind waves built to be pretty sizeable. That wind with flat water would have been something special...

The South tip on Tybee can be too gusty on a W. also it 's unsafe at high tide because there are no sandbars down wind.

We're having a demo with the Damian Leroy from Cabrinha on Sat the 6th if anyone wants to check it out. He'll have the new Omega kites with him ready to demo.
