Balz's Severne Flight School

Balz Muller shows you how to do foil freestyle moves. We'll add the videos here as they are posted.

For those that missed it, Sebastien Kordel's Flight School from last year: https://youtu.be/2jcCTp65boQ

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

I think I've seen Britt fly through some of these, or come close in attempting them. I haven't tried yet on foil. It's hard to figure out what I want to do, if it's try ducking, go for speed, jibe attempt fest, etc. So much to still learn/get better at. Worth trying as I can do helitacks on larger boards.

I'm fascinated by all of it. And, having spent some time in a windy "fin" location, even more stuff there. It's a bit like music. The more we dive into it, the more there is to discover. In ten years, I hope the fascination feels just as fresh.

Amen, brother. I question sometimes whether I'm even the same species.

Surprisingly good video. Lots of slomo

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

I like this short format honestly. Putting ideas in my head.

I think I will go back from wide set footstraps to narrow to practice these on my FoilX. I like the power going upwind with them set outboard but I think I'd like to do the footswitch on foil and try doing that before a jibe, and just get used to it. A lot easier with the narrow strap setup. I also find getting in the rear about 3-5 times easier when they are close set.

Also, he makes a foot drag look so easy. I tried body drags on the fin recently and it wasn't that scary. Getting the front foot in I could do pretty easily but both feet was hard to maintain speed and control. Think on the foil just dragging one foot on freeride would be okay...

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

Thanks for posting those. Good inspiration.

Balz: I just did two foiling duck jibes.
Everyone else: That's nice but people do them all the time.
Balz: In one transition?
Everyone else: Oh...

I kinda bashed my way through three today. Of course, it took six jibes to do that. Mosking

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

I have tried ducking on foil but was not successful yet...

Today was low tide, so much that my 38cm weed fin was tearing up the greenery on one end. But I did try to get into switch stance while planing on the fin. I think it's going to be easier on a foil because: I've sailed out of a jibe like that already and you don't need to get the rear foot anywhere near as far back to maintain pressure on a foil.

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

I need to practice that because I'm hopeless at it. If I try to exit a jibe switch, my body reacts violently. Happened today and ended up straightening up, going the other way and splashing.

But, I need to practice for so many reasons including winging. Good news is that the water is starting to get hospitable and it's not annoying to get that cold flush. I must admit I sail a lot more conservatively in the first three months of the year.

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

I've definitely had those!

Really glad he's put those videos up because it didn't look like anyone else had anything on WINDfoiling switch w/o coming through a jibe. Very little material on it online, but tons on WINGfoiling switch.

Want to try it soon and get a video (hopefully). I've also seen people do foot drags on iqfoil gear (and even ducking the big HGO) but I want to do it on the freeride stuff at slower speeds. I start freaking out a bit with the big sail when the pressure comes from gusts closer to 20kts and I'd rather have the ease of ~12kts to even attempt on that kind of gear.

Also, I know wingers will do foot switch first, then enter a jibe. Never seen a video on doing that for windfoiling, but it seems like a fun thing to try? Just switch, prepare for the carve, and come out on the right side...At least it will get more of the focus on the carve/flip instead of the footwork. The reason I like the strap jibe and coming out switch is it let me mainly focus on the carve and where I was going. I just need to angle less upwind when coming out.

Yesterday I did lots of foot drags just because they were so easy on the 135 Kode/6.3 (hadn't realized it before) and was sailing by my girlfriend as she was getting on plane for only the second time w/ fin.

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

It was gusty this morning with a 5.6, had my straps ser back to inboard. Did not feel comfortable enough in gusts to try a foot drag, but I did do a chicken foot switch, not all the way in the opposite strap. I think I could've done it just got psyched out. A lot less pressure than on a fin and more delicate.

Hey! One I can actually do already!

Don't have it down reliably but I have actually done this.

Re: Balz's Severne Flight School

Had an unexpectedly good evening sesh last night. FG2 7.0 and the foilx. I practiced stepping to switch a little (still not fully committed from straight line to opposite strap but got the face-out lean with the feet swapped.

Also tried to get off my front foot some. Pulled it back out of the strap and lifted it lightly, but still scared to take it fully off the board, kind of taking it one easy step at a time. I see the possibility of the foot drag...

Been practicing my helitacks on 4.4 freek and kode in light winds, may try a foiling one soon when I can use a smaller sail than that. I could've after the wind picked up but was having lots of fun with barely a pump so didn't rig down.

I'm finding that with a sail that size, even on that board too, if I come through a jibe fast and with a short carve I end up more with a race jibe with the sail raked back on the leeward side for the flip, taking the opposite strap early. I don't feel as good doing the strap jibe with that sail, staying in the old front like I would on the 6.3 freek and below.

Also, check your adjustable outhauls. I have been using the FG and bigger with adjustable outhauls and I noticed I was using outhaul tension a bunch. Turns out that the cleat on one side had slipped back and it made it impossible to tension more and hold outhaul. Some gusts were probably closer to 20kts. With a loosening outhaul it made me blow up on some jibes that I otherwise wouldn't have. I'll have to fix that boom...

Got in the opposite strap... briefly

Think I went too far downwind and got the wobbles

Going switch isn't that easy even for the pros. (Nice aerial in the seconds preceeding this, too)

^Hahahaha man.

That really makes me want the foilx with the center strap too. I've been thinking about modding the board to replace the tuttle with tracks so I can toss the jack plate, maybe I could do center rear and more inboard fronts too. It needs some repairs. Maybe I'm just daydreaming.

Repairs/mods are fun to do and you'll learn a lot. However, it'll be cheaper to get a part time job at MickeyD's and use the funds for a proper board between your time and materials. Ask me how I know... Lol

I don't mean to sound like you shouldn't do this at all. I'm about to whack the nose of this thing - again. My heavily modded 2004 Starboard FreeFormula 158 https://photos.app.goo.gl/PfiBWtSsst18FU2B9
