Re: Saturday 18th?

Chris V and I raced at the LLSC. We both had our hands full in the first race. He longboarded with a 7.5 and I foiled with a 7. So, we did the sensible thing and came in and rigged down. Seeing as I could barely tack on a 7.0, I figured, a 4.7 would be enough. Chris grabbed a 6.5.

It was a case of buy high and sell low. Wind blew nicely before the start of the next race and then took a lunch break. I couldn't even complete the course and abandoned two in a row. It was so light at times that even an 8.0 wouldn't have mattered. With one more race on tap, went in and grabbed the 7.0. Guess what happened next. Yeah, spanked for the entire next race but at least finished the durn thing. Moral of the story: when racing rig big even if it's uncomfortable.

Grabbed some food and went out and free sailed the 4.7 after racing as the wind decided to fill in nicely. Howard joined us and had a good time so happy for him.

Hamdi - I get the frustration. Been there, too. Sometimes it isn't what we hope. Best thing I can offer is expect nothing and just take what the day offers. Some days are gentle soul sessions, some are epic and once in a long while, it's forgettable but that's the rhythm of life. My most "liked" post on FB was a day where the wind literally blew zero - the pic Gene took a few weeks back. I went out with no expectations and actually had a good time despite the zero wind. I just experienced it for what it was (the quiet and fog were fascinating) and it turned out in its own way epic.

Re: Saturday 18th?

Thanks for the encouraging words guys- and occasional sarcasm is ok too, I have big shoulders and can take it.
Clearly many of you enjoy the sport a whole lot better and that’s great, truly!
Not a one size fits all I guess. I am too used to my other sports (mountain biking, rowing, swimming, dirt biking, skiing, hiking, etc) where I can enjoy the outdoors & water without the guess work of whether the session will be a blast or bust. If I truly decide to sell out, hopefully my stuff will find a more appreciative and patient owner.

Re: Saturday 18th?

Hamdi, I’ve had a lot of those days- and today was another one! I hoped riding my Equipe would be like riding a bike. It’s huge like tanker after all. Nope. It was like I’d never done it. It should have been epic fully powered raging raceboard heaven. Wasn’t. Two little girls in a 420 kicked my butt. In. every. single. race. More than once I said to myself, “self, you should sell all your sh*t”. I redeemed myself slightly in the last race- found a groove and didn’t drop my sail multiple times ( but still finished DFL). Moral is, I get better if I do it more and getting better is part of the fun of it.
It was a hard, gusty, shifty, on-off day but I’m still glad we got out. Good

Glad you redeemed yourself and walked off the ledge Chris! And not just because I don’t want competition when selling my sh*t, lol ?

Galts: solo session started 2pm, with shortly after a race at Yacht Club to keep me company! - afternoon warmed up nicely, very gusty at times but worked well with 6m plus the benefit of no motorboat disturbance & flat water spot.

It was a fun day for me. I foiled with my 6.7m sail, then converted to windsurfing when it picked up.

Sorry to see Hamdi slogging around. My solution is to change gear and rig for the conditions. I find the same need to adapt with other sports.

Thanks Barrett. Glad you had a good time - sure seemed like it too.
Yeah, rigging 3.7 yesterday in itself shows my lack of understanding and very slow learning curve in this sport, doesn’t it? Partially because I was overpowered with a 4.7 on Mon and thought yesterday looked similar- again, lack of learning to read the conditions.
Agreed, all sports could require some adapting like changing gloves or layering of clothes but I am never thus far off or slow to learn in any other sport I am engaged in. Just not my thing I guess. Or maybe too old to learn something so different than anything else I have done?

I have done this SO MANY TIMES. Rigged for the last session, not the current one. A famous adage is: Generals always fight the last war. This is a tough one because experience is a great teacher - it's how we figured out NW winds suck and don't show up on an east forecast on a sunny day at Vann's at 1 pm. Lol

Chris and I got stung just like you did. I went from being very fast to barely crossing the starting line after rigging down. It just happens at times. Part of it is living at the pointy end of things. You are either a hero or a goat (not GOAT but ? ). The Lasers did fine yesterday. Never terribly fast but never terribly slow. The end of the first race found the A-Cat which won the first race going home because of the wind picked up and a couple of Melges scows needing help to get mast side up again. Howard and I talked to a guy later on who'd been on a keel boat that's usually very fast and they'd decided in the light winds before racing began to put up their big jib. Yeah, that didn't work very well either.

I've had epic bike rides where I've bonked. Or had a bunch of flats and had to limp home. Ski runs where I got in over my head. Like I said, at the pointy end, things can go wrong. The challenge is a) increasing our skills so that we can deal with a wider range of conditions and b) resetting our expectations to deal with changed conditions, etc.

I'll leave the technique discussion for another time. Here's a great example of resetting expectations and moving forward in the Ocean Race where the IMOCA fleet has been literally breaking their boats going 30 mph in the Southern Ocean. It's terribly frustrating for them as they've trained and prepared years for this race and then have to deal with all sorts of things. Here's how one crew deals with it. So, hit your reset button, go for a bike ride and we'll take up next weekend when it will be a lot warmer and breezy.

Ha Ha! Sounds familiar Hamdi.
Just recently I went from “I’m selling all my gear” to day dreaming about a new 4.7 in the same day.

You’re a good sailor, don’t sell that gear you’ll regret it.

Thanks Alan. I debated about giving VP another try today and at the last minute changed to mountain biking at blankets creek. I don’t know what sailing would have been like but biking was absolutely delightful. Still on the fence about selling; holding for now.

A cold, cold NW day... glad you didn't go. I would have sold my gear had I gone yesterday. Some days are definitely better off missed. Biggrin

Go some place nice and warm and rekindle the relationship. Alan has noticed the same that I've noticed. You are at the edge of a big step up in abilities. I've been impressed by how far you are getting through your jibes. It won't be long now.

Well, that pretty much sucked. I don’t know why I bother with this sport with more frustrating days for me than many other sports that I am engaged in. Time to focus on greener pastures ?. ‘Windfoil stuff for sale - cheap’ post coming up once I inventory my shit - ehm, I mean very good equipment that will be a steal for someone ?.

We all had a good time today. Maybe if you rig something bigger than 1.5 ? you would enjoy it too.

Man up butter cup. So you rigged the wrong sail, boohoo! boohoo! don't be a baby. You wimp. We never should have let you into the club.

Dang, someone had a double expresso this morning. Lol

There are so many memes to be made of this but I only have 24 hours in a day.

Once a wimp, always a wimp, right?
Definitely didn’t deserve to be admitted to the club.
All I can feel good about is knowing I gave my best shot to ‘fake it till you make it’!

Love you too Gene!!

Btw, I am at the river and there’s a decent breeze - so your sailing plan might be a winner too.
