Friday Sept 30

It looks like I missed most of the Thursday fun, but tomorrow morning still looks like a possibility. Anyone heading out? I'd be kiting at VT. Because of the wind... and maybe because my wing center strut popped last week...

You'll have company.

I'm windfoiling after lunch as well.

FX is all over the place. NWS reporting 13-23 starting at 6am, going down some in the afternoon. Windy is reporting 5-18ish this morning. So far my experience at the river in Roswell (granted Lanier might be different) is ‘uber calm’ - pic from 7am, not a ripple. Great weather and water for rowing but not windsports. Live report this afternoon would be appreciated.

It's looking too light for me and my 12 today, so going to hold tight and hope for Saturday afternoon.

Hey. I’m new to the area, just moved here from Seattle. Kiteboarder, have 8, 10 and 14m.

Considering coming out today. Any situation report from the lake?
What are reliable wind sensors around Lake Lanier? IKitesurf currently shows 20kts at a sensor called “Lake Lanier South”, but most other sensors show 10 or less. 20 would be more than enough, 10 would be too little.

Re: Friday Sept 30

Welcome to town. We may not be as windy as the PNW but the water is a lot warmer most of the year. Biggrin

The gold standard for the lake, imho, is actually Gilmer Airport in Gainesville. It's well elevated and seems to correspond pretty well with on the water conditions. It reads a touch low at times on easts and is fairly accurate - maybe a little high - on wests but by 1-3 mph. Most sensors around the lake have issues and sometimes very big issues. I'm not sure if the sensor you are referring to is the one on the dam which can be good or not so good.

the i* apps, while good in places with very specific geographies don't seem to do any better here and a lot of times worse. We simply use the public models (GFS, Euro) and the hourly NWS output. Use your favorite apps that have those and the NWS is from their site and what we post on the weather tab on the front page.

The Lake Lanier Sailing Club also has a web cam that faces SW and captures westerlies pretty well. It's in a shadowed location for easterlies, though.

People will report here at times when they get to the lake. If you are needing a report, you probably want to mention it ahead of time as most of us just park and rig.

Mind that in the spring, we have a local effect when the air is significantly warmer than the water. The cold water creates a barrier layer and any meter reading or leaves rustling away from the lake will accurately capture what's going on in the afternoon. The LLSC cam does help with that.

Re: Friday Sept 30

Thank you so much for the detailed reply and the warm welcome!
The airport sensor seems to be hovering around 10 MPH so looks marginal right now. Personally with my gear I've found I need >= 11kts (so >= 12.5 mph) to make it enjoyable.

I'm definitely a bit spoiled coming from the PNW and being just a couple hours away from Hood River, OR. Hoping to check out Tybee and the Atlantic coast as we get settled here and have some time to explore. Also looking forward to the warmer temperatures extending the season here. In Seattle, kiting between September and May requires some serious determination, thick wet suit and gloves Smile

Hope to see you guys around!

Live report. 2.00- - Van Pugh, NE 5 to 10 mph. Missed it? Some ( not much) dark water, NO caps. Always subject to change.

Re: Friday Sept 30

oi. Went out to Long Point rec area (Hartwell) on a bit of a whim after seeing the rain forecast had been backed off this morning. It was cranking. Again!

Rigged a 4.8 this time and still overpowered. Sailed for the experience, mostly 'managing' my speed and trying not to launch off the impressively tight, steep, high chop. Some nice "rolling swells" at times out in the main channel.

Things settled a bit after 3 (again) and I had a great 45 minutes where everything felt just right. Even hit a couple jibes on my skinny 102L

Then it went "light" (i.e.... ~ 20 mph?). I coulda rigged up, but was exhausted, so counted my blessings and packed up.

Happy for the experience of these last two days. Sailing above 5.0 winds - never thought I'd get or take the chance to taste it myself...but wow. Windsurfing just keeps on bringing the amazement! (I shoulda started this journey when I was a teenager!!! Dash 1 Biggrin )

And then, it got worse. Cray 2 Wasted drive. First time in years I essentially just turned around and went home.

From my limited experience, if/when Windy report doesn’t agree with noaa, it’s likely a bust. Have anyone else noticed that or am I generalizing incorrectly?
Sat (today) looks good , Sun is another case where Windy is predicting very low (like 5 to 9) whereas noaa says 10-20); might be another test of the hypothesis?

Welcome to another west coaster! May this place make you an especially hearty kiter dealing with trees and mostly less ideal conditions! (Former SF kiter here)
