Thursday Sept 29

Ian's influence begins. Tomorrow morning will be insane with the morning kick on top the predicted 15-25+. I'm going to opt for a bit later in the day.

The parking at Vanns may be crowded as a lot of fishermen have been parking in the upper lot recently. As well, the grass may be crowded with gear. Be kind and keep your gear clear from paths, water entry etc.

For those newer to the area and less experienced: we have three good NE launches on Lanier. Vann's Tavern (more scenic, imho), Van Pugh (closer to a lot of folks) and Tidwell. Tidwell is less popular but is relatively an onshore launch from the boat ramp (park away from the ramp, though) so if you think you might get in trouble with 15-30 mph winds, it may be a better option. The other two don't have easy Plan Bs if you end up more than 100 yds/m downwind. The only real option for kites is Vanns so make sure they have room since they really can't be anywhere else.

For those on the NW side of town, Galts should be good. The water will be flatter and it's smaller.

Have fun and be safe the next few days. The water has chilled and you'll need at least a shorty if not a full suit especially with the wind.

Re: Thursday Sept 29

Two of us will be sailing at Broyles Rec area on Hartwell today. Don't suppose there's any compelling reason for anyone to make the drive.

But, maybe tomorrow (Friday) there will be? That is, if anyone has anything left in the tank. Sounds like y'all have had a big week!!! Biggrin

Either way, safe/fun sailing to you all down there on Lanier !

(and, of course.... for everyone getting the brunt of it all further south and east . . . *)

As much as it pains me, actually contemplating van Pugh this morning. Atlanta kite fb group which isn't that active had a post yesterday so between the tall grass and lines, vp may be easier.

Probably Van Pugh for me, but......not sure I'll sail, storm winds kind of suck.

Exhibit A:
Currently: Fair
Wind: from the Northeast at 16.1 gusting to 34.5 MPH (14 gusting to 30 KT)
Temp: 60.0 F

I can do 14 kts. I can do 30 kts. I don't want to do 14-30 kts.

Dave D. reports that kite bros on 9m kites and Kim W is winging. Headed up to Vann's Tavern now. 4.2 and 3.7 packed for foiling and have the 91 l. board packed, too.

Re: Thursday Sept 29

David, Alejo and Mark (kite bros) took the early shift along with Kim on a wing. Kites from 9 to 12 although Dave had his 12 at noon (overhead depowering) for quite some time during one pretty hard blast.

Then the neighborhood went to hell when the windfoils showed up. Lol Hamdi, Chris Pryon and me. Low 4s was the better call today. Richard and JP winged to bring the day to a close.

And, no sharks.

Re: Thursday Sept 29

Went to Allatoona today from 5 to 7 and launched from AYC.Only a couple of motorboat and a sailboat on the water.
Windfoiling with 5.8, first time in months…
I really love the longer fuselage giving more stability.
Thanks Webguy ! ??

Hartwell on Thursday: Dimitri and I had the lake all to ourselves, launching from Broyles (saw two brief appearances by motorboats).

winds mostly 20-30 mph, with sailing club wind gauge indicating lulls as low as 5-10 and gusts to mid 30s with one registering 40.

I was just hanging on with a 5.0 (the smallest I had with me) the first half of day, while Dimitri was tearing it up on a 4.2 and a 68L wave board. Things settled a little past mid-afternoon, where my 5.0 was good and Dimitri stepped up to a 5.2/82L.

Super nice to get such a windy day...while it's still warm.

(low-res screenshot of Dimitri hitting one of his moderate jumps. I missed his big one)

We had 2 Wind Foilers, 2 Wingers, and 2 Windsurfers (fins) at Van Pugh.

May try Van Pugh again this afternoon (Friday).

Even busy Lanier was similarly vacant. No sailboats until afterwork crowd launched at 5 ish when the winds had backed off and maybe a handful of powerboats.

Thanks for posting the pic!
