Tuesday early bird special

Hoping they are underestimating this easterly wind.
Looking at a 9am session at Van Pugh unless everyone is going to Vanns mountain.

I intend to go to Vanns for a quick session, if the FX holds

If E wind picks up tomorrow AM, I'll head to Van Pugh.

Al and I wingfoiled at Tidwell about 9-11 am. Al used 5.0 while I was on my 5.3.

It was a great morning to be on the water. Warm air, even warmer water and a strong steady wind on Lanier in late June is a rarity. If anything, it was more wind than I needed for the 5.0 most of the time. Randy got in a number of flights in both directions with the wing. On one of his flights he was downwind and passed me going in the opposite direction. I kept turning my head to see if he was still flying and everytime I looked he still was. I was happy for him! And happy for me that I didn't crash while looking behind to watch him!

Thanks Al! It was a great day for sure. Al seemed to be on the foil most all the time. Now if I could just spend as much time flying as I spend getting back on the board after a crash.....

It would be fun to hook up with Randy and Al on the Wings. Not sure about the Tidwell spot. I have never launched there. Is it more convenient than the usual VP/Vans/ old Fed? It was blowing great at Vans but instead of gearing down on my Wing,7m, I kept dropping foil size. Went from 1325/1125/ to finally 925. I get leery of the lulls on the lake so I figure the 7m is a chip against the big drops. But I almost dropped Wing size to boot yesterday. I came in to pump up a smaller Wing, but looked up and it started to drop a bit, so stuck with 7m. Sort of started to fizzle around 11:30am

Neil,

Next time we go I'll let you know. Tidwell is off Exit 16 on 400. Go right from Exit 16 onto Pilgrim Mill Rd and just follow it all the way to the lake. It is more convenient for anyone living in Sandy Springs or takes 400 to the lake. If you check your traffic app you can see the difference in drive time. The fetch goes all the way to Van Pugh. Best direction is E like Vann's. Not well suited for any west direction.

Randy, I recall sailing with you at Tidwell a number of years ago. The launch was good with wind directly out of the East, but compared to Van Pugh, or Vanns there wasn't a good rigging area. I recall carrying our gear over pavement to a boat ramp. Has the rigging area improved?

I don't recall what it was like then. I think maybe it has been improved. There is a grassy area right next to the boat ramp. There is plenty of room there for rigging sails, or wings. The grass extends all the way back to the rest room. There is also plenty of room on the other side of the parking lot. That's where I normally rig my sails. This picture is a little distorted but you can see it. There are some bushes and rocks in the clear area next to the boat ramp shown in the picture, so I launch from the boat ramp. Apparently the water was low when that picture was taken, so there is more room on the shore than is currently the case.

Hi Randy, did I hear or remember correctly that there has been more than one theft incidences at Tidwell? I hope I am not making that up and giving anyone unfounded concerns.
At times I find myself early and alone and get concerned about gear on my car rack especially if the area has had such issues.

Yes. I had 2 boards stolen there about 10 years apart (2002 and ~2012). I always tell people not to leave gear that is not being used out in the open which, unfortunately, I did. I think it's good advice anywhere you sail alone or with friends. In both cases I had switched boards and left the unused one by the boat ramp in the grass. I often had a board tied down on the roof of my car and never had a problem with that. Usually there are a reasonable number of people there so you don't have to worry too much.

Thanks Randy and sorry to hear about your boards. I don’t tend to leave gear loose and unattended - mostly because I am stubborn to make my first trial set of gear work or go home rather than re-rig. But in the rare occasion that I rig a second sail, I leave the first in the grass somewhere. My remaining gear is typically in the sail bag - not terribly hard to zip open and grab the masts or even sails. Scary…

I think a rigged sail would be pretty hard to steal, and not necessarily a useful or appealing to the criminal mind. They would have to figure out how to break it down. Doing so would take a bit of time. Plus, w/o a board there is not much use a ws sail and likely would be valued only by someone who knows abut windsurfing gear. Boards can be confused with SUPs or towables for boats and can easily be thrown in the back of pick up truck, van, or tied down on a car. That said, I break down and pack my first sail before going out with a second one. Even if theft is not the motive, sails could be a target of vandalism, a handy obstacle for someone to trip on (and a prelude to a lawsuit), a fun place for small children to play on or a handy place for a goose to go the bathroom.

Watch for dog poo in that grassy area. Not as scenic as vanns and you pretty much have to work a bit upwind to get some clear space. Saves about 5 min on the commute
