FoilDrive Plus

So I got to play with the FoilDrive Plus today and yesterday, so far I'm pretty happy with it.

I didn't intend on using it when the wind is good but today it came in handy even though I didn't use it to get on foil. I noticed that with it I could launch from anywhere, so I did.
I'm camping directly across from Vanns, literally facing the park and I don't have a extra car with me right now. So I launched from a protected bay behind me and motored out to a nice windy section pretty much in front of my camp site. I was thinking of going across the lake to Vanns as I saw a Richard on his Armstrong wing and a few windsurfers and kites out and about. I wasn't 100% sure to the battery capacity so I played it safe and just winged in a area that some how turned out to be really good spot. When I got back in I only had used 12% battery so getting to Vanns and back shouldn't have been a problem.

So the unit... Well It takes some getting use to. I used it with a paddle yesterday in claim glass. Controller attached to the paddle getting going on foil as a E foil was pretty straight forward. Leaning forward enough to keep the nose down was the only real challenge to getting up on foil. That and regulating the throttle require a little practice.

Using it with a paddle to catch waves, bump or swells seems like it's best application and I'm hoping to use it for some tanker wake surfing and who knows what else.

Using it to E Foil is good too, and for when there's no wind it could give some more water time. It seems like a great way to learn to foil maybe the best way to learn.

Using it to get on foil winging... not so much. At least for me. Only tried it once today and it was like adding another level of difficulty to everything. Like juggling balls while wing foiling. Grant it I mounted the controller in a bad spot and a bad angle so I will try it again tomorrow if the rain isn't too bad. But all in all I don't expect to be using it to get on foil for winging, but who knows.

The biggest surprise to me was how little effect the motor and folding prop have on foiling. Whether it was in the water or out of the water was almost impossible to tell the difference. Other than a slight sound difference and a very minimal almost undetectable speed difference it was like it was not there.

20 minutes Efoil run time ( continuous on foil use) with the battery is good for one person, but a second battery would be ideal. I hope to build my own additional batteries at some point because FD gets a premium $ for their batteries and shipping is crazy high, like $300 high! Something I'll have to learn how to do.

Oh yeah forgot to mention using it to experiment with equipment. You can be a little more objective when evaluating gear. I was quickly able to determine my board I was using needed a shim for the foil angle because the tail rocker in this early model foil board).

It has some things minor things that could be improve on, but all in all a good piece of equipment.

Link ...Good idea Alan. PS thanks for the "friends don't let friends launch form OF on a easterly" message. It inspired me to use the FD as a Just In Case.today.

“Friends don’t let friends launch from OF on a easterly”

I deleted it after I noticed you were camping, figured you might have one of those site with a side shore launch to east wind.

Very cool Roland! Yea, I saw you out there and was wondering why anyone was THERE! I thought you had come down from OF park. I headed in your direction - as far as I've ever been from Vanns with the wing, but then headed back. It would have been real upwind work and I wasn't believing that the wind would hold (I was wrong on that).

Now all need power assist for sure - haha.
