The rowers seemed to not like us very much.
I can't for the life of me imagine why.
Owning a motorboat cured me of wanting to own a motorboat. It was a challenging and fun project that my son & I worked on. We were proud the day we launched it and we had a few laughs but mostly I was alternately bored or scared.

I imagine working on it with your son created great memories too.
Yeah, you’re making way too much wake for our skinny boats buddy! Mine is 11in wide at the widest middle (28ft long, weighs 30lb) and, though long oars help, since they are attached to the boat, they can be a challenge to keep them in or on the water during chop.
Here’s what 3.9ft reported on the ARC web page looks like:
- 4ft at the dock (1st pic, measured with my oar) and most of the ~6miles i rowed today Looked like that
- couple spots had sand just above the water (2nd pic) and I had to go around those
- and maybe 4-5 areas had barely enough water for me to go through (3rd pic). At 3.5ft reported depth, these would have to be avoided even with a single scull
It is possible to work your way around the shallow spots (or just get out and drag your board past them when the fin hits to ground). It is more fun to go when the water is high enough so that the area just to the west of the island is below the water level. The higher the better - until it's up to the parking lot.....in which case it's usually closed. Most of the time - the river is an easy place to sail. The main problem is the wind is kind of sketchy. Windy days when I don't have time to make it to the lake can be the most fun, but I also go on light wind days when it is not worth driving to the lake, and just SUP if there is not enough wind to sail.

I recall rowing downstream just past Roswell Road Bridge into a howling wind with 3'-4' swells breaking over the deck. Fortunately I was in an Alden Double (wide & stable). Made it okay. -Bill H.

Funny you bring up wind - I only got into windsports for those (rare) days that it’s too windy to row enjoyably (rather than hoping you’ll stay right side up until you get back to the dock). And I got into rowing for those days that the trails are too wet for mountain biking. So, windsurfing is supposed to come up for me only as 3rd string contingency- trails are too wet to mtn bike and there’s too much wind to row ?
I have an Alden single, 1968 or something I think. I learned to row with it in Albuquerque (Rio Grande). It would take effort to flip my Alden, which I haven’t used since 2011 - which is when I bought my Fluidesign, which is a whole other deal in terms of being flippable.
The only parts of the Chattahoochee I’d feel comfortable foiling is in Lakes Lanier and West Point and even then proceed with caution.
A warning/reminder to new foilers, launching from the Van Pugh walkway ramp if you go hard right there’s a long stretch of rocks that need to be avoided if the water gets shallower. They were visible Monday and reminded me of them.

And the lake is still above full pool. If we hit a dry patch, that'll become more important. Also, visitors to the park like moving or chucking in large rocks by the ramp. Just because your foil has cleared the bottom doesn't mean you are fully in the clear. Swim out a couple extra feet to give yourself some margin.

I almost wrote the same thing about Alden being stable enough for fishing - except that I don’t fish and would have been a hypothetical comment. ?
Let me know if you start rowing again. I keep my Fluidesign at the Atlanta rowing club, which is about 4 mile bike ride from my house.
Thank heavens this isn't one of those forums where people scream at you for being the slightest off-topic. We started with Monday - a day with gusts over 30 and ended up on Friday fly fishing in the shallows.
And, why I like our little corner of the world. Keep it up, ladies and gentlemen.

I had the opposite problem. We got a 2 seat kayak so we could paddle together. Problem is my idea of that was to just go at relaxing pace up and down the river. Her idea was to get a workout. Finally, I said ok - you paddle or we can just take turns.

I didn't know you were a Fellow Fly Fisherman Bill.
I tried to fly fish for Panfish and Bass out of my 1st surfski (18" beam), I quickly sold it and bought a much more stable surf ski (24" Beam).
Wading the hooch above Helen is much more productive though. I practice catch and eat!

I tried to fly fish for Panfish and Bass out of my 1st surfski (18" beam), I quickly sold it and bought a much more stable surf ski (24" Beam).

Hmmm. I had to lookup "Surfski". I didn't know what those are. Looks neat, kind of like a sophisticated sit on top ocean/surf kayak.
Haven't fly fished in a long time either...
