Catnip City - 4/18, 19 and even 20

Weathercat™ has gone bonkers - more wind in the forecast. Wind in forecast tomorrow PM after rain clears out and Tuesday. Maybe Wednesday morning, too.

Usual spots for usual winds for me. If you have questions or need clarification, don't hesitate to post and ask. If you are sailing someplace else, please post, too.

Just flew in to ATL from a windy trip up to RI for Easter. I plan on a full day at Van Pugh tomorrow. I like to get there early and get on the road by 3:00. So hope to catch some folks in -between shifts.

Neil.

Pretty much this. From glass to zephyr to gusts 30+ in about 15-20 min. Rhett was the only foiler sort of rigged right on a 4.2. Alan and I hung on to 4.7s. Chris P finned a 4.8 (iirc). Chris had the move of the day. The rest of us loitered in the parking lot for a long time waiting for the wind to fill in and just as it did, Chris pulled up. Good

Dot forecast boosted for today. I expect to be at VP around lunch time.

fwiw, the wind has outperformed the forecast a number of times in the last few weeks. Bring smaller gear just in case.

Source - me who has gotten blown off the water 3 or 4 times in the last two weeks alone.

So can you do like Chris and give people the code to get into your private lake? Acute Of course, your neighbors might expel you if a bunch of nar do well windsporters showed up at the gate... Lol

Re: Catnip City - 4/18, 19 and even 20

by the time I got there, the wind was light 8-12. Neil and Richard were winging. Alan on the windfoil. Chris P and I arrived about the same time and rigged windfoils. Z rigged an Ezzy Cheetah and fin.

Wind stayed light for about 90 minutes but then filled in. Very fun zipping on flat water on 5.4.
Rhett showed up late.

Wind never got up to forecast but was a nice 10-18 or 20 for enough time that I have zero complaints.

Going to give Vann's a shot mid-day tomorrow.

Galts: Foiled my new Naish 4.7 with the yellow submarine for the early pm shift. Lots of good flights. Surprised how little wind this combo needs to fly. Haizer came by a bit later

Randy -

There is no gate, but certain people are wary of people having fun - haha.
- "Do you live here?"
- "No motors allowed" (but this doesn't have a motor)
- "No 'launching' from dam" ( I did on Monday )
- on and on:
- When Covid was young, our parks were closed and a guy called the cops when when we went to look at the wind. Lame.
However, the cop was cool

Maybe we can coordinate soon and go together.

It is nothing to write home about, but Monday happened to work out perfectly for a 20 minute sesh with almost no driving required. The wind needs to align with the lake and be strong.

The almost no driving part is why I sail at Lake Azalea (the Chattahoochee at Azalea park) sometimes. Sometimes convenience>performance. I would have sailed the river on Monday but the wind didn't pick up here until fairly late.

I remember some shoals and a lot of down trees in the river. I sometimes would go flying hitting my SUP fin on a log. So I am guessing you can’t foil there? But would like to hear your opinion? I am always up for a challenge.

I think foiling wouldn't be possible or at least really expensive because foils would get trashed. There are probably stretches where the water is deep enough for a really short mast, but the depth varies a lot from day to day, and you never really know where it's safe. I have had my fin run aground from time to time, but was no big deal. You don't need really a long fin in the river because the current helps with getting upwind. It is fun and easy place to Wingsup for that reason.

I don’t know if this is available to non-members but might be worth checking:
Atlanta rowing club webpage has a water conditions page that has a lot of info about depth, flow rate, temps, etc. I use it often (was just checking it as I am thinking of rowing soon) for rowing. For me with a single person scull, ~4ft translates to rowable but requires some zig zagging to avoid certain areas with sandbars. 5-5.5 ft translates to rowing without that zig zag as sandbars would not be a concern.
I agree that foiling would be very challenging, requiring very short mast and intimate knowledge of which parts to avoid. I would think a short (weed?) fin would be ok at around 5-6 ft, depending on how knowledgeable you are about locations of sandbars.

Re: Catnip City - 4/18, 19 and even 20

Good point. I always look at the ARC webpage and their webcam before going to the river. The "forecasting" section also is helpful because you can kind of figure out whether the current will be rising or falling. I don't have a specific number but I think Usually after a lot of rain the current is pretty strong. Another thing to look at is the E-coli data, though unfortunately they don't seem to update it very often. There is not much traffic on the river when there is much wind, though rowers and a few motorboaters are around from time to time. Warm weekends there are lots floating drunks, SUPsters and kayakers. Watch out for fishing lines as well though they usually end up pretty close to shore.

The water is very cold - colder than the lake. I wear a wetsuit on the river if I would wear it at the lake on the same day even though most of the other people on the water listed above do not.

One other point - sail on westerlies (SW-NW seems best.) If it is East - you have wind and current working together. Never tried it, but don't think I'd like it.

Re: Catnip City - 4/18, 19 and even 20

Interesting about water temps at the river - Makes sense. Fortunately I have not noticed that and hope it stays that way as noticing would mean I have capsized my scull (knock on wood, haven’t done that before except for once at the dock due to my oar going under the dock). I have occasionally worn a sleeveless thin wet suit for rowing in very cold weather but it’s too active -and hopefully dry- to deal with that, gets very sweaty.

Also right about the crowds on the weekends - I try to either row very early on weekends or stick to other sports. I have had close calls with other boaters and actually 2 collisions with rowers going on the wrong side of the river (them, not me). Fortunately and miraculously no one got hurt or capsized in either case. Going backwards in a twisting river with sandbars, other boaters, logs and all sorts of other floating crap (I have seen window frames, dead deer,…) can be a challenge. Fog makes it even more ‘fun’ Smile
