Van Pugh Vandals

I talked to Chris Arthur who is the Chief Ranger for park operations at the Lanier CoE office (the main number wants to refer you to the Information Office in Mobile which I don't think is going to be much help from an action perspective). Mr Arthur was pretty animated about what's happening at VP, much of which is not in the news– burning a picnic table on the beach, destroying the Life Jacket sign at the swim area, trashing other items in the bathrooms for several months now. Apparently the vandals went to the trouble of carrying large riprap stones all the way to the bathroom to break holes in the wall.

Among other things, cameras are under discussion with their legal people. As you might imagine, a United States Army Corps of Engineers project like that has many layers of complexity. Bottom line is they are working on it, public contributions to the solution(s) may be possible. They are very focused on catching the bad guys before they spend the money to replace fixtures in the bathroom and elsewhere. Mr Arthur assured me he'd keep my number and be in touch as warranted. In the mean time, "if you see something, say something" say it to 911.

It really seems as though this is directed specifically at Van Pugh since it keeps happening there. They ought to get the local news media involved in reporting this - it might result in someone coming forward with some info that would help catch whoever is doing this. Raising awareness of the problem is important.

I did see a ~20 sec or so piece on Channel 2.
How about this - a sign outside the park entrance to the effect: $500 CASH REWARD for information leading to…

By itself would be a deterrent, even if never paid or flushes out the perp.

I write this in a kidding manner...but

I think the geese/ waterfowl are who to blame for the bathroom vandalism.

They had opportunity, motive and have a long history of bad behavior.

In the photo below I would assume that most people are approximately 98% certain that the duck did not blow the gate.
However, if you are honest with yourself you have to come to terms with that 2% that thinks " maybe the duck did it"

I’m in for a contribution to the Corps. to be used at their discretion for addressing the vandalism.
