Re: Sunday April 3rd

I just got back this afternoon. Not sure I can sneak away already, but I saw that the wind looked decent in the morning. Hey, all my stuff is still in the car!! Maybe I will see you over there.

ETA 10:45.
If there’s no parking left, I am moving the Tarpon Springs FL resident’s trailer on the grass!
Assuming he hadn’t chased away all the wind already. If not, I am going biking and he can hug as many spots as he likes ?

We got domed - wind died. I had to leave early. Hope it comes up in the evening for those who could stay.

Re: Sunday April 3rd

I was good to see all that came out today.
Started off fine but as Webguy said " wind died "

Maybe soon the water will warm and we can lose some of this dome effect

Re: Sunday April 3rd

I foiled 4.7 at Galts - overpowered at times. I lost one* of my GoPro's after getting launched (one of several launches). One of the sailboat racers ended up capsizing - mast pointing straight down and he was standing on top of the hull pulling on the CB. I don't think that worked. And I thought getting launched a bummer.

*I had more than one with me.

In an effort to try to tame the bigger gusts I tried moving the track back (it can go about 3 inches back with the Power Plate system). This vid shows it both farthest forward and farthest back. Not really sure it helped, but I didn't spend that much time on it. It also took me a while to get used to it. I do think you have to go faster to take off with the track back.

Turning turtle. Did that a couple of times. If it's a wide boat, then they may have needed help getting it up. Otherwise, skipper and crew both have to grab the center/daggerboard and pull hard. The real pain in an old Laser I used in college is to turn turtle and have the daggerboard slip back through the case so you have to swim underneath and push the board back in. Yuch...

Yeah, foil back is going to take either more speed or more back foot pressure to get off the water - you've made it more nose heavy. With it forward, you had the compact geometry of the RRD Pocket Rocket which a couple people, at least, have found challenging. Interesting experiment.

I watched a solo sailer rite (right) a Hobie 16 from a turtle a couple weeks ago on Lanier. Once he got the trampoline up enough to catch the wind it came right up.

Re: Sunday April 3rd

I had some bad timing for VP, even 8.0 was not enough mid-day. I went over to LLSC after to hang out and it picked up quite a bit and backed to SW, almost to the point I was going to re-rig, put my wet, wetsuit back on and go out. Cooler air of the afternoon punched through the dome, I guess. Gilmer reported gusts over 20 the whole day.

The same photographer who took my pic last week was at Galts yesterday shooting the sailboat race. He sent me a bunch of great pictures. Here's one.

Nice pic. I guess I'll have to sail at Galt's now since no one is taking my pic lately at Lanier. Lol

I think I am probably going to stick with the forward position. It definitely is easier to get up on the foil in the forward position, and I didn't see much improvement in control. I think I can get up with less wind and slower take off speed than in the back position. I didn't find it all much easier to control, at first, but it did get better. I was kind of kicking myself for not trying the middle position instead of going all the way back. I think what I may do is bring my wing and if it gets to be too much for the 4.7, switch to the wing. What could go wrong with that? Crazy
