Lanier powerboaters this spring at the pump

I imagine there will be fewer of those big things prancing around in a few weeks when the cc statement arrives and reality sets in.

Re: Lanier powerboaters this spring at the pump

I did a few calculations about how much it costs to drive to the lake and back. Depending on where I go at $4 for gas its ~$6-$11 round trip, cheapest to most expensive. At $5 it's ~ $8-$14. I get around 30 - 33 mpg depending on the location and route. I could save some gas though by taking my roof rack off and using my soft rack for trips to the lake. The main benefit would be not driving around with the roof rack when I'm not going to the lake. Or I could use my inflatable f-one.

An EV would probably cost around $1$1.5. I assumed 50 kWh for a range of 220 miles (would probably be less if a roof rack or trailer is used) and ran it through the GPC bill calculator. Summer rates are higher so it could be around $1.8 - $2.8.

YMMV

$30 round trip for me right now but still worth every penny.

Anybody want to trade their Corolla for a Catalina 25?

If you switched to winging on an inflatable board, the gear would pay for itself in about five weeks.

(Don't do the math, this is hyperbole. Unless things get worse. And, they tend to.)

Fuel costs.
1962 when I started driving legally., gas was $.35/gal.
Cars cost approximately $2000.00 new
Cost of living was much lower
Not sure what compounded rate cost of living has gone up in 54 years, probably more than ten or eleven times
A loaf of bread was $.29 now $3.00 or more.
Enjoy your toys

When I was about 17 years old, a spring break trip with my friends to Daytona was where we would fill up in Daytona for 19 cents per gallon plus we got a free dinner plate at boot.

Yeah, just when I was wondering if I would ever use my windsurf rack that i have put together for the EV car or should think about selling it (as it takes some room in the garage), the gas prices outweigh the convenience of using the van vs the EV car. It’s weird to say as I just came back from a ski vacation where daily costs are astronomically higher (even with a season pass) but I don’t know if I personally could spend $20-$30 round trip to keep sailing - especially on those iffy days where getting skunked is a real possibility. Gene’s neighborhood is getting more and more attractive - or loosing a lot of weight to make getting skunked less and less likely ?

For chevy express my trip is now about $26 - both convenient and nice in winter, but a weather warms, I think I'll start taking the little toyo pickup. Should save about 1/3.

Ignoring that you could drive up weekly in the summer time and about equal a single day's ski pass at some resorts (did I really just see $249 for a day pass at Deer Valley? FML), the convenience of the van means never having to awkardly explain that the sail you'd like to have used is sitting in your garage because it was either forgotten or too hard to pack along with your other gear. Not that anyone here has every had that conversation. Right? Biggrin

The advantage of losing weight is not only will you foil sooner but it improves your mpg, too. Lol I think I'm going to get my Tillo surf foil out of mothballs because that sucker flies in nothing.

Re: Lanier powerboaters this spring at the pump

All great points webguy. Clearly it’s not ‘one size fits all’ type deal, which is why I wrote ‘ I personally…’ and admitted the irony of my statements coming right on the heels of an expensive ski vacation.
Having said that, couple comments about skiing:

1. Yes, day tickets have gone insane (park city was at $255 with all the taxes) - however, season passes have gone the opposite direction. I paid $520 for an epic pass (last July) that’s good at 40 ski resorts all year other than very few holidays. I skied 13 days with it and If I could do what a ski bum I met on a lift was doing - park his RV at nearby rest stops or Walmarts, etc. and ski all season, - I guess I could have skied everyday for 6 months with the cost of propane to heat my Camper and some gas depending on how close the nearest Walmart or Truck stop is? ?. BTW, the ski bum referenced did NOT have heat in his camper van and apparently rubbed hand warmers all over his sleeping bag and bundled in! Don’t know what his weed expenses were to take that as ‘living the good life’ (as he put it).?

2. We tend to compartmentalize activities and, for me, skiing still falls under ‘once a year family vacation’ category where budget considerations get evaluated differently than daily sports and hobbies. Right or wrong.,.

Oh, btw, I never heard a discussion about not having the right sail at the lake…must have been busy cutting my losses and heading back home for biking or rowing ?

Re: Lanier powerboaters this spring at the pump

1. Great buy on the Epic pass. I tried the sleeping in the van thing in college in Vermont.I was double bagged and, every time I moved, a blast of -10 air shot down inside. After two days in we found some girls that let us crash on the floor. fwiw, weed was cheaper back then, too. Lol

2. I totally get that. You work hard for your time off. I just wanted to put it in a bit of perspective. Yes, the cost has gone up but, even over the course of the summer, it's still a modest cost for an activity relative to a lot of options.

Any way, oil was down something like 6% today so we don't need to panic just yet. Of course, it'll take weeks for the downward move to show up at gas stations but that's another story. And, as painful as the price rise is, I'm very grateful that I get to sleep in a relatively peaceful city tonight. As we've seen, not everyone enjoys that.
