Fri-Sat-Sun 2-11/13

New thread in case someone shows up who missed the earlier sessions this week.

I'm off to VP for after lunch. Wind was gusty yesterday - the air is quite warm for the water temp so expect lulls and then blasts. The price we pay for a 60+ degree day in Feb. OTOH, it means the lake is slowly rising in temp so that's a good thing, right?

Cool - I am planning on heading up too - will be winging - not sure if VP is best with wind shadow, but will see

Re: Fri-Sat-Sun 2-11/13

Channey and I sailed out of Van Pugh. Let's just say the extra mileage to Hartwell Wed was worth it because it was the most consistent session of the week. Lol

Did a downwinder to the LLSC and, to the surprise of my friends, I made it back after some slogging in front of Aqualand. About 21 miles sailed today. Worst part was the wind absolutely shutting down when Channey and I were about 150-200 yds from the launch which as already a PITA to reach as the wind had gone south already. I put my regatta skills to work and pumped my sail in. Somehow. At a pace that can only be described by my usual placings at the Fall Classic (ie not podium).

Saw Langdon, Haizar, Richard at the LLSC. Chris V was there, too, but didn't catch him on the water before heading back upwind.

Fun day but the motor boats are starting to appear. I hate to say this but I miss December (not January, though). Blush

Re: Fri-Sat-Sun 2-11/13

It was great to see everyone. Thank you Chris for hosting at LLSC, when I arrived there was wind and Chris was rescuing someone who had a boat fire - with an LLSC whaler I believe. It was great to meet Haizer and see Langdon. I put on most of my winter kit: new 5mm gloves and booties and even an old hood ( with ear "pukas" cut-out to hear the wind). My wetsuit is on the lighter side. Everything worked well for being warm but, it was over 50 deg out! I was working on foil winging: 2400 cm foil, 6.5 m wing, 115l board.

No, I did not get on the foil. I got very close - haha - but then while pumping in a gust I put the wing into the water and killed the speed. I did do the worlds ugliest jibe at 1 mph and I can imagine doing (non foiling) tacks now. William came down to visit me near the Jr area and he looked great. Saw him and Langdon crossing Chattahoochee bay nicely foiling later. Haizer was looking great too.

During the Fall classic Neil got on foil in a whisper of wind with similar gear to what I had, so practice, practice. Foiling is possible in pretty light winds - and yes, we've practiced pumping at a few Fall Classics.

I was thankful to be out there yesterday. Thank you again Chris for hosting!

Re: Fri-Sat-Sun 2-11/13

I'm going to swing by the lake today even though WeatherCat threw up on the rug last night and covered the dots up with ... oh, you get the idea. The wind seems to be to the west of us until too late in the evening. Euro is more optimistic on the wind getting here before dark so we'll see what happens. The models seem to be saying 8-15 (I rarely see dots until the wind graph is 9 or 10) so maybe enough with a big sail and big wing. Or, I'll bob around like an idiot at which I seem to be pretty good.

You should check this website more often. Chattahoochee Bay only had one motor boat and it was dead. When it turned south we had an easy reach to the beach. Good

I am hoping the dots reappear after lunch...
It will be hard to go from 62 to low 30's without a breeze

I plan to sail Sunday afternoon at Van Pugh.

Darn that weather cat - just returned from a snowstorm in Denver & was looking forward to sailing today with warm sun till Wx cat nixed the Fx.

ROFL

I think you waited until I rolled out of my driveway to run errands on the way to the lake before posting. No matter - had fun. fwiw, some of the worst offenders were just outside the LLSC bay.

Anyway, if I wanted easy, I wouldn't be on this website in the first place.

I'm going to go up this afternoon and rig big. That should bring the wind.

My 2 cents…it’s a perfect mtn biking weather Langdon; cut the losses and head over to Chicopee ?.
I am also targeting VP Sun afternoon. For now, enjoying the trails at Big Creek

It blew like we expected as it cooled down and the front started to move in. Patience rewarded

You know me - never the patient type, always on the hunt/move for rewards that don’t require patience. Mtn biking was my ticket to a non-patience requiring reward today. Glad you all felt rewarded in the end with your patience.

Good news is that you aren't likely to need patience tomorrow. Biggrin
