Old Fed reef warning

Yesterday, I was shlogging back home at Old Fed and about 30 feet to the west (upwind on a westerly) of the little island at the end of the reef by the beach when something went bump. I was on a 95 cm foil mast and that was just enough to touch some rock.

You may want to give it a bit more room than I did. The scratches filled nicely on my foil wing so no harm done.

I have scrubbed these too, They are definitely big enough to break foils at lower water levels.
You can see those and the ones above the island a little better in Bing maps.

Here is another.

The island and the reef are not the only hazards in the area. Here's is broader view. Old Fed is a "target rich environment." I have clipped the one west of the beach area (though not on the day shown in the picture). I also recall looking down and seeing a huge rock below my board in area William discussed.

Conditions were good at Van Pugh. The wind came up enough to convert from foiling to windsurfing on 120 L board with 6.7m sail and there were NO underwater hazards.

That circle at about 9 o'clock is the one that bit me.

I think it’s more about wind snobbery. Those little islands mess it up more than they ought.

Maybe those rocks and sandbar should be marked somehow, maybe with something similar to this reef marker?

That’s not a reef marker
it’s a No Parking sign.

Speaking of markers though, there used to be a rock/reef marker in the middle of the bay between Old Federal and Athens Park that has mysteriously disappeared. Not sure how shallow it is but I try to avoid it in the Catalina.

Perhaps a mast mounted GoPro or torpedo cam would aid navigating in the new world of hydro-aviation?

Sonar. I’ll just mount a Lowrance on the board when I’m foiling at Old Fed.
