Fri, Sat, Sunday - Happy May!

Today - 15-25 NW Van Pugh for most. Kites at Old Fed or anyone seeking or needing calmer water. NW is gusty. You know this ahead of time. No complaints. Biggrin
Tomorrow, SW 10-20 Old Fed for saner water. Every big powerboat will be out tomorrow. High of 80 so may be some dome effect. Water still in the mid 60s.
Sunday SW 10-15. Ditto.

I need to stay home today for various reasons. I've had two good days in the row. Sat and Sunday open. Also, I should look at Hartwell and West Point because of the incipient insanity. At least those constrained from much weekday sailing will get a couple of good opportunities.

Have fun everyone!

Edit: Gilmer just reported 16 G 32. So it begins...

I maybe sailing today.
Maybe at Vanns Tavern.
Maybe the parking lot will not be full
Maybe around noon
Maybe the wind will stay SSW and somewhat consistent
Maybe the dome effect will be ineffective
Maybe

Maybe I'll be in town. Tempted to wait until late afternoon after the riff-raff go home and the insanity subsides.

Maybe if the wind comes, I will go somewhere where SSW works.
Anyone any suggestions where it could be?
Sunrise Cove?
Vanns Tavern?

Looks like Webguy's thinking might be correct.
Aiming for 2pm now
I still think Vanns
May be stuck between the launch and 3 Sisters or have to drop back towards Athens Park then open water

Sailing on a SW a few times from Van Pugh or Old Fed, I was surprised how much wind is just downwind of Vann's. It's not ideal but the shadow isn't as bad as one would think from the islands as they are comparatively narrow. You may have to drop a bit towards Athens (next point) but I don't think you'll be stuck inside.

looks like the dome is in full effect for the moment - water looks like a mirror on the Sailing Club webcam.

Anybody care to report how the wind was Saturday and Sunday vis-a-vis the forecast? In Buckhead it was blowing strong but I was stuck in mother's day servitude.

Can't comment on Saturday (I think it was a bust) but Sunday was a woolly ride. Looked like a severe dome had set in (it was in the mid 80s) from the hill of Vann's Tavern and gusts weren't making their way that far up the lake. Keelboats were heeling over in the channel so we were a little optimistic. We puttered out to see how it was. It was light for about 15 min and then the switch turned on. I've seen it blast when the warm air finally pushes the dome out of the way so I decided to wait it out. I should have rerigged. We had gusts in the mid 20s easily. Gilmer reported a few gusts in the 30s and I don't think that's too far off. It would cycle on for about 10-15 min and then severely lull around 8-10. Probably one of the gustier days I've seen.

Add to that, the water state was confused chop from all the boats so dealing with the gusts and managing foil height was a challenge, too. I think that much wind with either flat or at least organized chop would have been doable or that chop with say 10-20. But, with both wind and water being a mess, it was one of those days where driving to West Point or staying home suddenly sounds like a better idea. It was nice to be out but felt a lot more like work than it should have for as sunny and pretty a day.

Thanks for the update. My FOMO decreased a bit after your description. Sounds like a terrible day to kite.
