Yeah, Starboard rarely did powerbox back then if at all. Very likely a regular tuttle given the length and the board width.

Not sure I have anything since I still have my Carve 111 and Futura so I need fins for those. I'll check. What size fin do you have now?
Probably a 36-40 would be good for riding around. 42 for light air. Below 36, you'll need either lots of wind, speed; or a delicate back foot not to spin out.

Bunch of tuttles on FB and fleabay if I don't have anything.

Cool thanks. I have a 39. I'll look around and see what I can find!

Scratch ebay - nothing cheap at the moment. Your 39 is a good start, though. Are you looking for more light wind punch or high wind control?

That board has a somewhat wider tail. I’d go no shorter than a 36cm for your high wind ripping fin.
You start tail walking with that combo and it’s probably time for a smaller board.

Looks like some decent regular tuttle fins. No idea of the lengths.

That True Ames blue G-10 fin in the middle looks deep tuttle. I don't think that will fit your board.

More thoughts on old vs newer:

Today was a bit of a struggle to get planing on the 126 l Starboard S-Type. Days like this I would always get planing on my Astro Rock. Light winds with periodic gusts. 7.5 sail. Definitely felt like I should be planing more but just wasn't getting there. Finally decided to move the mast foot forward, It was 3/4 of the way back, and so moved it about 3/4 of the way forward. Probably should have gone all the way. After than 2 inch change, the board responded a lot better, and I was able to get planing more.

Another big observation is that with the entire mast track set further back in the newer board than the older boards, I have to take less steps to get in footstraps and to walk around the mast. This is going to save a lot of energy and I'll be able to sail longer!!

(if you aren't already doing any of the following) You can also lower the boom a touch. That and moving the mast base increase the pressure and keep the board flatter. Also, keep your back foot away from the back straps in very light air. Place them more forward just behind the front feet. Pumping (like for foils) is your friend. Nico Prien did a nice video about it a while back.

Mast track is further back because there was a big change in sail design in the mid-90s that put the center of lift on sails further forward. More tension and better battens locked in the draft further than older sails. That's why classic boards need to be sailed with the mast base all the way back if using modern sails.

Cool, I will lower the boon a bit. Pumping definitely helped. My footstraps are all the way back and I'll move them forward next time the wind is light.
Thanks for the tips

Re: 1990--> 2007 Stepping into the future

imho, only lower the boom height if you are having trouble planing. I'm a big fan of reasonably high booms for wider boards - shoulder lever at least.

I tend to set and forget footstraps but the rear most are really for light weights or to absolutely loosen up the board to ride the fin. The big guys need the front front foot position while most of us are probably in the middle for both fronts and backs. Somewhere in the middle and depending on your stance what the front rear spread is. Use the boom and mast base for tuning for the conditions. You might want to compare the boards and see how far back the foot straps are on the SB vs the Bic. In the late 90s we really started to move the straps further back on faster boards. It would be interesting to compare how the straps line up vs the fin box on the two boards.

good news for the vertically challenged like me. this means (if we ever swap rides in the middle of the lake again)... I'll be able to reach it Lol

(also some good tips and clarifiers for me in your post, William. Tx!!!)

A little visual comparison for those that have neither board handy to look at. Biggrin

Astro and S-Type. Note how far forward both the fin and rear straps are on the Astro. The fin screw is towards the back fo the fin. On the S-type, compare the outside rear straps to the fin box.

Edit: Added 2021 Fanatic Jag (freerace) as a comparison

Re: 1990--> 2007 Stepping into the future

Wednesday session at Lake Hartwell. Rigged a 5.3 Waddell wave sail. Went out around 11:30am. Got hammered, way overpowered and bummed that I left my 4.7 at home. Gary Holt and I sailed for an hour before coming in to get some food and wait for the wind to die. I had the worst catapult of my life that had me stunned for a second while I checked for broken things: board, mast, boom, bones.... in that order. Nothing broken, but that is the first time I have cartwheeled through a catapult!

I finally put the pieces together and realized what happened. I was hooked in and had just gotten in the footstraps and was getting up to speed, my windward rail got caught by a lagre size chop and pushed downwind suddenly, then wham!

We waited until the wind died and went back out. Much better. I made quite a few adjustments to boom height and harness lines, and finally everything clicked and I was sailing in control, releasing the death grip on the boom, hanging down and letting that power travel through the mast/ feet into the board.

I'm realizing that the Starboard S-Type 126 migth actually be the all around board that I have been wishing for, for a long time. Pretty rad!

So happy for you. Glad you took the time to get things dialed in. It's a neat process when you get to the point where you figure out what the designer had in mind. Thanks for the update as hopefully others will be inspired to get out of the comfort zone and try something different- me included.
