Ten Ways to Wing. First one looks ideal for Jockey's Ridge at OBX. Or maybe the Wright Brothers Memorial.

Remember when Robby said we'd only need a 4m2 wing and that everything would be simple? Tests determined that was a lie

Interesting video - shows how to get on the foil in 10-15kt, 15-20 and 20-25. Interesting part is the easiest looks like 15-20, while it seems harder in the higher wind than the "medium wind."

Speaking as someone who is clueless about these - the high wind is complicated by a) the small board size - that thing is pretty thin and b) starting switch stance which makes pumping a touch more difficult. Medium winds looks like he's in the sweet spot power-wise as well unlike the light wind scenario. He has enough power to stand up and hold on.

All the same, very helpful video and I imagine someone more experienced can see some nuances that you and I miss.

No board leash needed? This guy says so. (Not sure I will be trying this right away.)

Looks like he copied my method to return kiteboat to shore when the drops below the level needed for flying.

Gunnar? Yep, Gunnar (he's really skilled). Funny that I was talking to Barrett today and he was saying he tried winging once with a windsurf board and no leash and what a PITA it was. I think I might try that sometime in light air but I could see in heavy air things going sideways while your board decides to foil itself downwind. Time will tell, though.

Good vid, Randy.

Re: The Generic Wingsurfing thread

Based on my limited tries with a wing and windsurf board+foil - having to use 2 leashes is kind of a pain. It's just tricky trying to get on the board that way. But yeah Gunnar is super skilled. OTOH - just trying his "self rescue" sailing might be worth practicing by itself in the right location and situation. I'm thinking side shore where the downwind side ends is an easy walk back. You never know when something might go wrong and the leash isn't there.

The story of Drake's rig: https://www.surfertoday.com/windsurfing/the-story-of-jim-drakes-first-wing-rig?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed

Teaser:

Quote:
The idea of the first "Wing" rig came up in August 1981 when Jim Drake visited me in the surf editorial office in Munich. It was precursor of modern wing surfing.

Jim and I had been friends since 1977 when Surf-Magazin was founded, and my article about the "true inventor" of windsurfing was published.

So in August 1981, over dinner, we discussed our experiences that we had made over a year earlier at the PanAm Cup in Hawaii - the development of funboards and the first really high jumps over the waves. ...

Gofoil speed runs on Maui. Speeds: "28, 29.5 , and 33.44 mph so far with a ratified speed sailing watch called the Locosys Gw60"

Those speed runs look absolutely insane. Amazing how fast wing foiling has exploded.

Re: The Generic Wingsurfing thread

Now you don't even need a wing, a sail, an electric motor or a paddle to foil.
