Tuesday: Warm Wind Coming

How about this forecast for a day in January: "Mostly sunny, with a high near 69. West wind around 10 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph."

Please post if you plan on going. If the wind is West, as forecast, I plan on sailing at Van Pugh.

Air 20 degrees warmer than the water - this should be interesting.

Is it welcome to the Pleasure Dome?

or Thunder Dome?

You didn't mention another possible outcome - the Boredome: watching glassy water at the lake while Gilmer is reporting "wind one-zero at two seven zero, gusts two zero.......density altitude 2500, and all you windsurfers at Lake Lanier - who you gonna believe, me or your lying eyes?"

Whoever gets to the lake first give us a live report.
Maybe I can slip out of work for 2 or 3 hours

* The I99 makes glassy with gusts kinda doable

Yeah those big wings are pretty amaziing. I would think the LLSC web cam ought to give a pretty good view of the water if the wind comes in the west.

For anyone coming to the east side of the lake via Brown's Bridge

Quote:
Single-lane closures are set for Monday and Tuesday, Jan. 25-26, on Ga. 369 as part of a bridge construction project, according to a Georgia Department of Transportation press release Friday, Jan. 22.

Weather permitting, the closures are scheduled for 9 a.m.-2:30 p.m. each of those days.

The closures are taking place so that crews can pour concrete for the new two-lane, 0.8-mile bridge crossing the Chattahoochee River.

Don't worry - the water is still plenty cold. Yes 3

Re: Tuesday: Warm Wind Coming

Not many good launches on a WSW that is not either shadowed or rocky. (Obviously)
The first fishing pier is the best spot so far and has some wind exposure even on a WSW ( maybe wrapping around the terrain. A WNW-NW would be decent here.
Decent place to rig many sails.
Downside... 175 paces from parking lot to launch.

The second fishing pier would be ok on a NW and has a much shorter walk.

Re: Tuesday: Warm Wind Coming

Al and I used to launch from Keith Bridge Park on the North side of the lake from time to time. SW and WSW is the preferred direction there. It can be a hike through the woods to get to the launch or a bit of zig-zaging upwind from the parking lot. Al usually did the former, while I took the later. We did have some luck at times when the dome effect was in full bloom at OF though the gusts were quite wicked on those occasions.

The launch I mainly used on for SW-WSW was Two Mile. You did have to work upwind a bit, but it was not really bad. The layout of the place has changed and last time I went it didn't seem as windsurf friendly as it did back in ancient times when I sailed there regularly. Now you may have to launch from the boat ramp which adds more wind shadow.

The difficulty is not just the launches but also the type of weather that produces a SW or WSW wind. It is often warm days in the winter/early spring when the dome is in effect and the wind is much more gusty and crappy than normal even w/o the dome.

William put all of this stuff and more on wiki, so it's worth a look.

Not the first I’ve been skunked and I’m sure it won’t be the last.
I’m just thankful me and my boat made it through the storms last night, I’m pretty sure a boat or tree close to me got struck. Shok
