Outage Wed Nov 4

Power went out Wednesday afternoon at the building where the server is located. When the power was restored yesterday evening, the building didn't "reboot" - power remained off. Fixed this am.

Good to see you all again. Yes 3

The day continued to provide amusement. Network switch died (for our wireless) and I had to failover to an idle replacement. That's a once in 10 year thing?

Yay....

Building went dark last night - some major electrical problem - and we didn't boot properly when it came back up this morning. Sorry if you missed anything here.

Just when I feel bad and think , "pay the money and have it hosted in the cloud."

https://www.bbc.com/news/technology-55087054

(for anyone who doesn't remember, we began to self host after a debacle at a normally good and very big cloud host)

Quote:
An outage with Amazon's web infrastructure left smart-home enthusiasts unable to use basic household items.

Amazon Web Services is a huge part of the company's business and the backbone of the internet's most popular sites and services.

A widespread US outage late on Wednesday disrupted many of those services.

Robot vacuums and smart doorbells suddenly stopped working in people's homes.
Widespread problem

"I... can't vacuum... because US-east-1 [region] is down," read one popular tweet, from LinkedIn's top information security official, Geoff Belknap.

"Welcome to the future," replied another user.

The iRobot company, makers of the popular Roomba robot vacuum, acknowledged the widespread problem.

"An Amazon AWS outage is currently impacting our iRobot Home App," it said.

"Please know that our team is aware and monitoring the situation and hope to get the app back online soon."

This time a power pole decided to crash down on Piedmont Rd in the middle of the night.

I've had years where the power didn't go off. Then 2020 came along...

Edit: all four lanes were closed today up the street - still as of about 11:30 am
