Rigging a sail for windsurf wave foiling

How to power up your sail and use a smaller size.

I love this video. Don't use enough downhaul, negative outhaul, and boom low on the mast. Everything I've been doing wrong (and plenty of people have told me) for 24.5 years is now right. So don't bother me any more- I'm gonna be wave foiling, even if I am at one the wrong launch or the wrong lake. (Once I get off the DL for good.)

You are indeed an early adopter, wave wind foiling for some 20 years prior to its inception. Acute

The one tip I don't get is the boom all the way to the bottom? Does anyone else lower their boom for foiling vs windsurfing? I have been doing the opposite.

The question I have is does this only apply for wave foiling? My favorite foiling sail is 5.0 m wave sail. Would it all apply if you are using small wave type sails?

Certainly not just for waves. It would seem to apply to any one wanting to use the smallest sail possible where ever they sail (that would be me). The biggest sail I carry now is a 5.8. I have found that I can usually get that going when fin windsurfers need an 8.0+ sail. Yesterday I could have used the 5.8, but decided the bag out the 5.0.

This implies the foil experiment is going well?

Getting better. I had 3 or 4 sessions in Hatteras this last summer/fall that really made it easier to dial in my gear/technique. Jibes are being attempted and my pumping game is strong. The foil also saved one trip from being a complete skunk -- so I'm starting to get some returns on my initial pain. I'm still having problems with altitude adjustments in higher winds though.

Also, I finally have someone to foil with over here (Chuck H. is jumping into wind and wing foiling). That helps with the stoke.

Sounds good. Hit us up if you want some input. Otherwise, I'll let you enjoy the journey of discovery. We're here for you if you want to share your victories (or pain). If you allergy to bigger sails continues, consider a big wing - the guys in Texas are using the i84 and i99 in some pretty low winds. I'm glad you are able to enjoy the light days with minimal sail.

You've coined a new acronym I'm going to be using: TMOM Lol

I think for the style of his riding and his gear, it makes sense. That's how I rig my Choppers - based on his advice. Small punchy sail, larger wing, meant to turn and, when possible, capture the energy of the swell.

My 7.7 is rigged completely differently and since our Dam Great Adventure, I'm rigging with even more tension in anything that's not marginal conditions.

tmom Biggrin
