Foiling speeds

Remember when we all thought we were doing 40mph+ on our Windsurfers until our GPS’s made us face reality.
Well I got a new dose of reality by only hitting 18.4mph Wednesday with my Moses 1100 and Ezzy lion 8.5

Curious to see others gear/speeds are.

Re: Foiling speeds

The max i hit with my Moses 795 wing was 19.5, believe using 6.4 sail that day.

With the 1100 wing and 7.6 sail, I think I have hit 18.5 - no pic of that.

I have also experienced the opposite of the spectrum thanks to my GPS watch - would have never guessed hitting 53.4mph on my skis and now i have proof of that Smile (see pics)

Re: Foiling speeds

18.4 is not bad. Not bad at all. Especially on Lanier.

Especially for that big low aspect wing.
I think the best an Infinity 76 has been shown to do is ~28 mph but I think the average comfortable, controlable speed is ~14mph.

Webguy can correct me. But I think the race crowd with their trick city high aspect wings are averaging around 30 mph on a high wind day. (Not saying they can not go faster on a broad reach).
They also have better skills, better gear, usually better wind, less boat chop and often weigh less than me

Also. Foilers often do not appear fast or feel fast until we pass a Slapper that is throwing spray and making all kinds of racket Smile
Another example is when Webguy passes me while we are both foiling then I make a lot of racket verbally.

Hopefully Tuesday's forecast will hold and if you wish to go faster you might have an opportunity

Personal note
Wiping out at 15mph is less painful than at 20mph

I don’t think I’d want to go 53.4 on something with no brakes. Shok

Maybe 53.1 or max 53.3 but not 53.4, right? Smile
The joking is more for webguy than you as he thinks my quoting of such speeds in decimals is silly, I think. What can I say, difference between engineers and finance gurus!

Seriously though, I doubt I would have signed up for it if someone said 'do you want to make >53mph on skis,'. Once done, quite exhilarating though. Having said that, with the right conditions, gear, and experience, i really don't think my stopping distance or risk of injury was any higher than say going downhill on a good descent with a road bike (where hitting ~45mph is fairly common even for non-racers like me) or worse a long/steep descent in the woods with a mtn bike.

On a different note - get your mtb bike, Charleston Park is empty!

Don't forget the trees - just make sure most of the impact is on soft tissue! ?
The pic is of a buddy of mine - as any good friend would do, I stopped to make sure he is ok and helped him up as soon as I took his pic and put my camera away safely!

In seriousness though, with an empty slope, good smooth snow, clear visibility, sharp edges and experience, I would take 53.4mph on skiis than say 40-45mph descent on 1in tires, asphalt, and a million things that can come up in front of you on the road - those brakes will be false security IMO unless you have a long way before you have to come to a stop.

Re: Foiling speeds

I've only GPSed by 1000 and 1500 surf Tillos with my 7.7. Neither is super speedy.

The 1500 hits a wall around 15.

The 1000 cruises around 16-17 and tops around 21 for me before it's generating enough lift to be scary. If I flatten the stab a half degree, cruise goes to 17-19 and top is in the 22s but I haven't pushed it hard.

I have not GPSed the smaller Tillo wing (around 850) or the AFS F700. Both should be capable of 25 but I'd need to be on a smaller sail.

Wing size and shape (profile depth, etc) definitely affect speed. If you really want to go fast, you'll need to be riding a 900 or less, preferably 600-750.

Re: Foiling speeds

If you want to go fast, don't use a foil. Old skinny boards are probably as fast as anyone would want. Foils just slow you down - I got 20.9 on my F136 with a fin and 5 m sail, while 19.6 was my best foil speed so far, also on the F136 with a 6m sail. That was on the 2nd day I actually managed to get up on the foil with a 1200 cm wing. As I've added more foil stuff (foil board, foil sail, 1800 cm foil wing) I've just gotten slower. I now seem to top out around 15-16. However, I'm more interested in foiling in lighter winds and that stuff seems to help so I don't care. My fastest foiling speed with my foil board was with my smallest wing - 770 cm, 19.3. I'm actually more interested in what is the slowest speed I can get up and stay up on the foil because it should equate being elevated more often.

Speed is relative. Going 500 mph on a jet plane feels like you aren't even moving - it is slow and boring. Going 25 MPH on a windsurf board feels fast. Going 25 mph in a car feel slow, esp. if you are on the way to the lake ans stuck in traffic.

BTW - speed is also location dependent. Galts and MAP have very flat water but it can have some big gusts. I've set my fastest speeds there in recent years.

Re: Foiling speeds

Speaking of no brakes, Lisa and I once did about 48 (don't recall exact number) on a tandem below Buford Dam before we had kids. 700cx28 for rubber.

Back to topic, speed as Randy said, is relative. Everybody wants to be faster than their friends but few people rig for bear and sail that way. Trey Olney is about the best for that. He won't be shy about rigging a couple of meters more then everyone sometimes.

Re: Foiling speeds

Oh Yeah. I forgot about the stabilizer shim. I might could squeeze another mph with that out.

I seem to remember a hill near the dam on a charity ride that people were hitting the mid 40’s on.

Re: Foiling speeds

Good example of how foil wing dependent speed is. Winging on a Zeeko Bullet windfoil - a 950cm2 race wing. Speeds up to 25 kts.

Re: Foiling speeds

Something I noticed recently that most of you probably already knew.
When I didn’t sheet the sail out in the gust it would put more pressure on the mast base and make the board dive a bit which I could offset it by leaning back a bit and speeding up instead of sheeting out making the board rise and slowing down.

Anyway... latest best speed with the 1100cm wing
