Vanns Live Report:

On shore Anemometer readings: 10-12 average with gusts up to 19 mph.

Plenty of whitecaps

Wind feels stronger than yesterday

CoBro and I are here, rigging a 5.0 and 5.9 respectively.

Gene and several kiters also here

Good turnout, wind was lighter than yesterday and was somewhat confused on which direction to blow from time to time

FROM HARTWELL. Sailed Long Point Rec Area on the GA side of lake on Sunday. New place for me. Got an early start with solid 6.0 winds. Rigged down a bit just before noon when Asheville Janes arrived and we got a few good runs on 5.7s. Wind let up...and we moved up to ~ 6.6s. Wind continued to lighten and we each moved to ~ 7.5s and floundered around between holes and shifty gusts for a while (was like driving in city traffic: stop...go! stop. go go go!!!! stooooooppppp...). Had another equipment failure as my mast base's rubber tendon snapped well into the middle of the lake. Would've been a long float downwind to a shoreline very far from my car if it weren't for Stephen being happy to speed back to shore to retrieve and deliver me a replacement. It's good to have fast friends on the water (thanks again, Stephen!!) Good Afternoon ended on a high note, with about an hour of what I'd guess were solid ~ 16-18 kt winds (We were nicely powered on the 7.5s)

The secret to maximize your water time on these easterly days when the wind fades quickly in the early afternoon.

1. Get there early
2. Don’t overthink it, Rig for the current wind, grab your short board and go. (Early Monday at Lanier was 6.0 for us too.)
3. When the wind fades use your current sail and switch to a foil if you have one.
4. Replace your tendons every year or go mechanical.

Alan

Concur, pretty cool place to sail from. Hartwell has so many good launches that it's obscene that there aren't more windsurfers and kiters up there.

That's an amazing pic. Thanks for posting it.
