What Non-Skid Product to Use?

The factory non-skid on my Techno 148 has worn in some places, namely on the nose and immediately in front of the mast track. This makes it quite slippery when uphauling even with neoprene boots on.

I’ve seen spray on non-skid products like this:

Will something like this work or do you guys recommend something more serious?

Yes that board definitely needs some new non-skid.

Anything would make it better than it is now.

Here’s an article

This is suppose to be stuff good too

Re: What Non-Skid Product to Use?

I've tried products like re-dek and was never happy with how they worked. The board looks crappy and the non-skid wear off quickly. The easiest thing to do (and I've had good luck with it) is to use Grip Tape like they use on skateboards. You can usually buy it at Ace Hardware and probably many other places. It is normally used on ladders for safety. Just use a strip in the places you need it - and less is more. Just a strip say 2 inches wide 6 inches long in the slippery places you step the most and you are good. Round the edges to stop it from peeling. You might glue it in place, but I don't recall that being necessary. Mine would stay on for a long time. Eventually you might have to replace but it but not often.

I have a roll of it and you could come by and grab some to give it a try. Send me a PM if interested.

Super easy way taught to me by Alex Morales of Tillo

Get some clearcoat. Enamel clearcoat is cheap and dries quickly. Poly clearcoat will take longer but probably last better. Get some non-skid powder from your local hardware store. It's a fine acrylic dust. Spray the clearcoat on your board, and while it's wet sprinkle the non-skid powder (not too heavily) on the board. When it's dry, spray another coat of clear to lock it in place. If it's too rough, gently sand it down with 100-150 grit paper.

You could probably do a sugar/salt deck the same way but I haven't done it. Others (see iwindsurf post below) have with good results.

One of these should do it in a pinch

I'm not sure which is finer. Don't use a "sand" additive. I'm not at home but I think I've used the top one. It's not quite as fine as I'd like but will surely get you out on the water for the weekend.

If you have time, order this stuff

You can do it the board lady way but getting epoxy, getting the UV stabilizer, etc is a bit of a pain. If you don't stabilize the epoxy, it will seriously yellow over time.

Re: What Non-Skid Product to Use?

I still have some of the re grip abrasive.
I redid the AHD 77 and it looks pretty good.
However it would grind off about 3 layers of wet knee skin when crawling back up on the board
I had to knock it down a little with sandpaper and shoot some clear over it to make it somewhat less painful.

I used the special epoxy but I like Tillo's idea better.
I shot the abrasive on with a $14 Harbor Freight Sandblaster from about 4 feet away.
(Lay down a piece of plastic film under and around the board and practice spraying the abrasive first before you apply whichever adhesive you are going to use )

It did stop the foot slipping no doubt. Webguy can attest to me galloping over the lake out of the footstraps

Really, the best thing to do is try them all. You may need to buy some more boards to do so though..... Yes 3

And don’t forget Sex Wax, messy but works great on paddles too.

I'm a no on that one, dawg. It makes a mess of the deck. It's great on surf boards but not so much on windsurf boards.

$8 for clear coat and non-skid at HD or local hardware store, some masking tape and he's in business.

Quote:
I did once. Nonskid wore down, I didn't know about ReDeck, and gave board wax a try.

It does work.

Three problems:

1) It gets really nasty-looking in a short time.

2) To the extent that it gets captured in the residual non-skid stuff, it
becomes extremely difficult to remove. With a surfboard, you just leave it out
in the sun for awhile and then wipe....

3) You have to keep freshening it up and the consequences of forgetting can be
more severe than on a surfboard.

4) The crud that it accumulates transfers to other things - like sails.

Edit: I've done several nose patches with the stuff in the pic. As said before, it's a bit coarser than a fine acrylic dust but cheap and easy to get.

I have close to 32oz of SystemThree Non Skid and 14oz of Fiberglass Hawaii

You are welcome to either one.
I am guessing it will take about 5 to 6oz to do your board. ( you will lose probably half when you are dusting the adhesive/enamel)

Sex wax was a joke, don’t use it.
But seriously, If all else fails try these.

Langdon, I'll buy what he doesn't need. I need enough to do a board.

Alan, I'm totally for the crampon suggestion. Acute

Re: What Non-Skid Product to Use?

Thanks for all the suggestions! Langdon, If you’ll be out this weekend I can grab the non-skid powder from you then. In the meantime, I’ll use Randy’s grip tape suggestion, I have some precut strips left over from when I used it on the deck of my sailboat.

Re: What Non-Skid Product to Use?

Here is a picture I what I did on one of my boards. This was probably more than needed, but this thing had no non-skid at all as I recall.

BTW - I forgot who I sold that board to. Anyone have it now?
