Re: Tuesday Sally

How's the wind? And the parking?

Thanks,

Colin

Sorry, off running errands. Richard G reports kites on 12s and 9s and windfoilers on 5.7s overpowered. Decent crowd. There's usually parking in the boat launch area as overflow but it's about a 50 yd walk to the grass.

Re: Tuesday Sally

There was definitely not a lack of wind.
It however was not a more common consistent East wind.

It was gusty and shifty when it was blowing hard.

I still had a good time, very good turnout

In retrospect, maybe not the best day to try out the short board for the first time, I rigged a 6.4 and was overpowered (for my skill level anyway). Got up and in the harness on the way out but eventually got blown downwind and ended up on one of the islands. I owe Gene some beer for flagging down a fishing boat to tow me back to the boat ramp!

If the forecast for Saturday/Sunday doesn’t get too extreme, I’ll be back for more!

Do you think the wind was stronger on the water than what was reported by G'ville?
I see that G'ville reported some of the shifts we felt but I think we were seeing more NE compass heading than what we saw when Hamdi and I first went out and off and on early morning.

I thought it was a lot stronger than reported.

Re: Tuesday Sally

Webguy and I were discussing this topic last week.
Foildude has mentioned the Wx station is slightly shadowed on a East.

I think G'ville underreported some today as well.

It was hard to get comfortable on the foil between the chop, gusts and shifts.

I wiped out many times today, sometimes for reasons unbeknownst to me

Re: Tuesday Sally

Aside from that, wind travels faster over water than land because there is less friction. If you have a long enough fetch then the wind on the lake can be stronger than reported. That's why sailing at OBX or coastal areas is so much better. However, most local places the fetch just isn't long enough. Also wind meters at airports are 30 feet above ground so that's an another issue as well. Airports have issues with obstructions too so, their reliability varies. I've seen too many times to count when G-ville is reporting low to mid teams or better from the W and wind at the lake says "sorry chump"......

What happens in a black hole stays in a black hole.
