Looking for guidance

I'm new here and about to relocate to Puerto Rico. I'm thinking about taking up kite surfing but don't know much about it or where to start. I'd like to see what equipment is available for second hand sale first. And also try out to see if I like it. Can anyone she's a light for me? Thank you in advance!

Welcome!

Until the kite guys chime in... Before you embark on equipment, you'll need lessons. I think the closest is probably Charleston, FL coasts or the NC Outer Banks. There is a bit of gear in Atlanta but not much. Usually, it'll be listed here (the local FB group): https://www.facebook.com/groups/617247225053684 You can also ask them for the latest recs on lessons in the area. If you can travel, consider going to OBX for lessons as they have great programs up there and it's a very beginner friendly place with open space and shallow water.

You can ask on there what PR spots they might be familiar with. PR is going to be a lot more kite friendly than Atlanta. We have some really good kiters here but the local conditions can be challenging between the deep water, gusty winds and few kite friendly launches.

You may also want to take a look at wing foiling as the learning curve is a bit more gentle and with PR trade winds, might be a lot of fun. Also, of all the foiling sports, it's probably the easiest and least expensive.

I'm recruiting Neil to come give you the sales pitch. He went from absolute newb to decent flights in just a few months this spring. Wingfoiling is probably the easiest of the foiling variations.

Re: Looking for guidance

Hi,

I come from a broad watersport background. Windsurfing, sailing, surfing, SUP surfing, SUP racing. I have found Wingfoiling very challenging yet, really fun and addictive. I think the key to a quick learning curve is consistent wind....something I have not had. Hard to get better when you have to wait a week or more to try again due to no wind. I have paid my dues big time. I am on my 20th+ session. I did complete my first jibe up on foil which was cool. I go in the ocean mostly, and its harder because of the swell and chop. Flat water with wind is much easier. I am definitely hooked, but I wouldn't describe the sport as an easy learn unless you come from a windfoil or kitefoil background. Oh, and if you don't already know how to sail and understand the concepts of sailing, it will be harder. let me know if you have questions. Neil
