tintin.gwen lightwind foiling - something many of us here can relate to. Gotta say, the Loft 9.0 looks enticing. I've found one on sale... in Italy. Wish they and Gaastra had US distribution.

Tacking a foil race board. I'm just going to watch this one on repeat for an hour and hope something rubs off.

Beautiful Phantom video. The blue water looks like New Caledonia - after all, starring Nicolas Goyard - but it's actually Brittany.

Cool video !

Flat ( or at least flatish) water with more than sufficient wind

Those sails rotate pretty easy after the jibe.

Well... at least the screw held. Shok

If you do powerbox (NP Glide, Chinook adapter), don't forget the tether.

Hypothetically, what foil should a person get for use with a Bic Techno Formula? This person may be 170 lbs with no foiling experience. Asking for a friend. -Bill

Depends on how much your buddy wants to spend. Aluminum costs a lot less than carbon and some argue it is easier to learn on. Some of the guys around here have upgraded from their original purchases so they may have their entry level stuff for sale. I'd get a really big wing though no matter what else. Also - unlike windsurf gear there are no standards in the foil world - parts from one brand won't fit with parts from others so you are pretty much stuck with whatever brand you start with.

BTW - does the Bic use a deep Tuttle box? Might be a problem if it doesn't.

LIke most things in life, it depends. Are you Is your friend looking for something easy and freeride? Are you they seeing themselves wound up on a 7.5 trying to keep up with Foildood or more gliding along with some others more freeriding at a more leisurely pace? Does it bug them if someone passes them? Are they tenacious and aggressive; or want something more mellow? Is their budget flush or skinny?

I like to go zoom, zoom list: Starboard GT-R, Starboard GT, Starboard Freeride, Starboard IQFoil, bunch of French foils including AFS (F800 wing), Zeeko, Alpine and a bunch of others. Price $1000-2000

I like to ride easy: Slingshot Hoverglide with either i75 or i84 wing, Manta (like Randy), Starboard Supercruiser, NP Glide M, L (not 19 model),

I like to do both and the budget has some room: Moses.

Your friend at 170lbs has choices and can ride stuff that some of the bigger guys might not enjoy as much (basically its just wing loading). Big wings fly at lower speeds but there's a drag penalty so there's no free lunch. Smaller wings need more speed but need less power to attain those speeds. Foildood is pretty impressive in light air with just an 800-900 wing.

Cheapest options new are the NP Foil Glide, Starboard Freeride (has short mast), Starboard Supercruiser, Slingshot (avoid Slingshot blue wings, imho), Manta (am I missing something?). Most expensive will be the Moses, Starboard carbons. One advantage Moses has is that the same fuselage will take either race or more surf style (bigger) wings plus the wings are more affordable than some brands. Slingshot requires a bit more attention than other brands to make sure bolts are secure or bad things can happen. Also, their default bolt size is M10 vs everyone else doing M6 so you'll either have to drill your board out a touch (not a big deal since you'll be covering the hole with a really big washer) or you can use inserts to allow you to use M6.

Big wings are more stable generally but race foils with 95-115 fuses can be just as stable. My Tillo at 107cm is, imho, more stable than a Slingshot. I think pretty much everything above is quite stable so don't worry too much about that.

So now that Randy and I have brain dumped, maybe your friend can tell us what their thoughts are?

I really think you'll enjoy it. It'll be humbling the first few times but it's a really cool feeling. A few of us would be willing to let you ride on our gear.

Edit: Left out Naish. Naish upped their game in 2020 and the latest version was pretty competitive in the freeride category. Their original foil was decent fo the time but new foils like the Slingshot Infinity series were a step up.

I'd look at used foils but I don't see as many on ebay these days. I windsurf classified may have some and there may be some on facebook.

Re: More Foil Content Part 2

I've seen very little on FB on the broader windsurfing groups. Probably won't see much until late fall when the North shuts down for the winter. That's why I didn't say much about the used market. I'm not on the Windsurfing Texas group - there may be something there.

Someone is selling an AFS-2 - predecessor to my AFS-85 in the Pac NW. Decent deal. By the time you deal with shipping, you might be close to what a Moses costs. There's also an aluminum masted Moses which is a 75cm mast closer in price to the other aluminum foils.

Edit: A little intermission. 9.0s in Cannes

A light air jibe Luuc van Opzeeland. I can't even comprehend... I'd love to give that kit a go just to blow the minds of other Lanier boaters.

Why foil race boards look like doors. All that area up front really helps in tacks. They tack faster than some people's jibes. Biggrin

He was none too pleased when the chase boat cut him off.

His kite control is pretty amazing. It's absolutely locked in just off the water. (What do I know? It looks amazing to a non-kiter.)

Amazing speed all around.

Re: More Foil Content Part 2

I reckon one of the chase boat's jobs is to fend off gawkers and goofballs. But I guess you gotta give the 40 knot foiler a pass out of respect. What are the AC boats doing for speed? 50?
