Saturday 8/15

GFS is suggesting maybe a bit of breeze and/or rain.

Re: Saturday 8/15

Hello. Philippe here (originally from Brittany, France), I am trying to get back into windsurfing. I was pretty decent ~34 years ago... I will love to get back in it, right now I don't have any equipment so, if somebody as some gears I can borrow that will be great. If I can get back into it, I will buy what I need.

I am available this weekend if anybody is going. Thank you.

Welcome, Philippe. Windsurfing is as good as ever. We still have the long boards you remember, the short boards are better (I think so, anyway), the sails are a whole lot better, and hydrofoils mean that we spend more time going and less time complaining. What level of gear are you looking for? What sail sizes are you comfortable with?

The models are currently favoring NW at Allatoona. My muted excitement is akin to winning a German car in a sweepstakes and ending up with a Trabant

Problem is boat traffic will likely be quite heavy. Assuming the beach is still closed, you can launch in the boat ramp. If the beach is not close it will probably be too crowded anyway. Despite all that, I still might try it. That place over in Red Top Mountain park might have less boat traffic, though I can't really say. Never sailed there. Maybe Bill H. can tell us more.

I think the previous post summed up Websters Ferry. You'll be disappointed if you're expecting a Van Pugh. I don't know how crowded it might get on a summer weekend either. There's not a lot of room for parking.

As threatened iwent to Galts. To my surprise the beach was open, but there was no parking. I was however directed to the boat ramp because I had a paddle board on my car, I could even park in trailer lot. I figured on the boat ramp anyway. To make a long story much shorter - this was basically a comedy of errors, including taking at least an hour to rig my longboard with the foil. To get to the punchline - like Apollo 13, a last second decision to take some duct tape along saved the day. There was some wind but too much heat and boat chop made it suboptimal.

So here's how you fix an extension with the collar pin missing, using duct tape and 2 allen wrenches......(I'm sure there are other/better ways, but this was what I had available.)

"Acworth, we have a problem." Biggrin

At least you have an excuse to get a modern pin-less collar. Hit webguy up if you need something in the meantime to borrow.

Re: Saturday 8/15

I have another extension. I always bring it along, but my van wouldn't start, so a mad dash to throw what I needed into our CRV ensued, leaving spares behind. Except for duct tape. I almost didn't bring the tool box which would have doomed the day.....For $23 I can get a new collar (+probably $10 or more for shipping.)

I think I will just make another pin with my bench grinder.

Snap collar is cheaper but in my experience not as easy to adjust: https://www.nbwindsurfing.com/shop/Windsurf/BasesExtensions/Windsurfing-Base-Parts/p/Chinook-RDM-Snap-Collar-and-Plug-x38460902.htm

Sorry about the van. Are you taking it to the vet to be put down or is there hope?

Re: Saturday 8/15

The van just cranked and not start, but after stopping and trying again it did fine. Happened twice so I didn't want to chance getting stuck at the lake. Got a text into the Honda Doc. Now it has started several times, so it may have just been sitting to long....

I was mystified as to how that 3rd piece in the rdm collar worked until I saw this. I can't believe how old my skinny extensions are - pre-2014........I may break down and buy a few of those.
