I think most people use 3.8 or 4.0mm Dyneema or Spectra for downhaul. Popular brands include Robline and Formuline. Sailworks carries it or you can hunt around on ebay. Chinook sells the 4mm black stuff (polyester) online at their website.
Polyester is the cheaper stuff that commonly comes with extensions. Spectra/Dyneema is woven (no core), stronger, usually lasts longer and runs through the blocks better
You can use 3mm for outhaul if you wish, especially if you are doing an adjustable. However if you go 3mm, get the good stuff not polyester.
Yes what Webguy said. I tried the 3mm Dyneema on the downhaul but the extension cleat bites the 4mm poly better.
This stuff was on sale for .30/ft and works great on the boom clamp and outhaul. It doesn’t get loose when it gets wet. I’ll be using the rest of it on my adjustable outhaul since it was cheap, available and stretches less than 3mm poly.
I bought a bunch of 3mm Dyneema when it was in sale at West Marine.
Chinook and most windsurfing dealers online carry
the line that comes with their bases and booms
