Van Pugh Closed, 8/05

Van Pugh is actually closed, entrance blocked, not sure why, may be damage from the other day? Old Federal is open.

Well folks, here's the damage assessment from Mondays storm on some of our parks. Unfortunately, Van Pugh North boat ramp and picnic sites will be 100% closed. Burton Mill picnic and beach areas will be closed (ramp will remain open) and portions of Two Mile Park will be closed until further notice when the storm damaged trees can be cleaned up, roads cleared, and facilities repaired to be made safe again. Vann's Tavern Ramp will be open, but the restroom is closed.

They could have closed Van Pugh June 30th and I'd have been hard pressed to notice a difference since. This has been an underwhelming summer.

Seems like some have sailed at VP just last week or so.

Looks like it will take a while.

Quote:
Some parks on Lake Lanier remain closed and cleanup continues at some marinas more than a week after a powerful storm with winds up to 80 mph that damaged boats and docks and snapped large trees.

Two days after the Aug. 3 storm, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers announced that several parks on the south side of the lake would be partially or fully closed as corps staff “remove hazards and conduct area surveys to ensure public safety.”

A news release from the corps said Van Pugh North would be fully closed, while Vanns Tavern, Two Mile Creek and the day use and picnic portion of Burton Mill would be partially closed. The Burton Mill boat ramp remains open.

Cleanup at those parks has not yet begun, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers awaits “additional funding to make this happen,” according to Chris Arthur, a spokesman for the corps.

Old Federal Campground is also closed but originally closed because of water damage it suffered earlier in the year, Arthur said. The campground also took tree damage during the storm on Aug. 3, he said.

Tidwell is the alternative to Vann's Tav (though I think it is really the other way around Yes 3 ). Old Fed Day Use for VP or maybe Sunrise. Unfortunately when some parks close others get more crowded.

Regarding Old Fed campground - is that place ever open? It seems to always be closed......

I think just the Vann's bathroom is shut down. I should go check but I'm lazy. Old Fed Campground has been shut because of erosion over the winter. VP being shut puts more pressure on parking at Old Fed. I'm confident, though, that the SEC will have football so that should help. (Totally resisting the urge to add a comment there.)

Shame the Sunrise Cove isn't open past 5 pm like it used to. That was a pretty good alternative in the summer.

Tidwell is a good option, though. Rigging is a bit of a pain but some good memories there.

Re: Van Pugh Closed, 8/05

I always launch from the boat ramp. There is plenty of room on the grass for rigging. Al usually launches from the other side of the parking lot. There is plenty of room for rigging there, but I don't like the launching from there as well as from the boat ramp. At Vann's I have to climb up and down the hill, when my private parking space is occupied.

I will say this: Tidwell is not the place to leave a board on lying around. If you switch boards, put the one you are not using back in the car. I've had two stolen there. On the other hand, I dropped my wallet in the parking lot once and drove home. When I got back it was still there with nothing missing.

Sad news to report.....

Very sad news. If someone was frustrated by the park being closed, they didn't help matters. I wish I had the time to start a gofundme this week but it's a difficult week.

Thanks for sharing the news although it's not what anyone here would have wished for.
